Chrome to use EVEN MORE RAM for Spectre fixes

Source 1: SC3Mitch https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/947343-google-chrome-will-use-even-more-ram-for-spectre-security-fixes/

Source 2: https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/12/17564064/google-chrome-ram-usage-memory-increase-spectre-fixes

Source 3: https://security.googleblog.com/2018/07/mitigating-spectre-with-site-isolation.html

  • To better mitigate speculative execution side-channel attacks like Spectre, Google has announced that Chrome 67 has enabled a security feature called Site Isolation

    • Site Isolation has been optionally available as an experimental enterprise policy since Chrome 63, and is now ready to be enabled by default for all desktop Chrome users.

    • available on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS.

  • This launch is one phase of Google’s overall Site Isolation project. Stay tuned for additional security updates that will mitigate attacks beyond Spectre

    • (e.g., attacks from fully compromised renderer processes).

  • Site Isolation is a large change to Chrome's architecture that limits each renderer process to documents from a single site.

    • Note that Chrome uses a specific definition of "site" that includes just the scheme and registered domain.

    • Thus, https://google.co.uk would be a site, and subdomains like https://maps.google.co.uk would stay in the same process.

  • As a result, Chrome can rely on the operating system to prevent attacks between processes, and thus, between sites.

  • Site Isolation causes Chrome to create more renderer processes, which comes with performance tradeoffs:

    • on the plus side, each renderer process is smaller, shorter-lived, and has less contention internally...

    • but there is about a 10-13% total memory overhead in real workloads due to the larger number of processes.

Rumour: LG to Supply iPhone Panels

Source 1: NinerL https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/947225-lg-display-signs-deal-with-apple-to-supply-oled-and-lcd-panels-for-2018-iphones/

Source 2: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/07/13/lg-apple-deal-supply-oled-lcd-panels-2018-iphones/

  • LG Display has signed a deal with Apple to supply both LCD and OLED panels for the company's 2018 range of iPhones

    • The contract will see LG Display ship around 20 million LCD smartphone panels to Apple in 2018

    • And 3 to 4 million OLED panels

  • This will reportedly ramp up in 2019:

    • LG is "likely" to secure the majority of 6.5-inch panel orders in 2019, increasing OLED shipments to 10 million units that year.

  • LG will reportedly produce the OLED panels for iPhone at its E6 6G plant in Paju, Korea.

  • Apple is expected to launch two OLED iPhones (5.8 and 6.5 inches) and one 6.1-inch LCD iPhone later this year, with the LCD device to be positioned as a low-cost option alongside the two more expensive OLED devices.

  • It's unclear at present what this means for previous Apple LCD suppliers Sharp and Japan Display

Rapid Fire

YouTube is terminating accounts that promote Twitch Streams

Source 1: SC2Mitch https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/947043-youtube-is-terminating-accounts-that-promote-twitch-streams/

  • Youtube has begun enforcing it’s long-standing policy against the uploading of videos that are designed primarily to drive traffic OFF of Youtube

    • Such as a Twitch stream announcement video

  • Youtube has started terminating offending channels without first issuing strikes.

  • From the forum post: “This is oddly harsh when the company has been softer on channels that have done much worse, such as pushing false conspiracies that could lead to harassment and threats.”

    • This may not be a fair comparison since there appears to be less gray area with this type of offence.

GPU surplus delaying Next Gen Nvidia launch?

Source 1: AluminiumTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/946521-new-report-alleges-nvidia-has-a-stock-of-over-a-million-next-gen-geforce-graphics-cards-ready-for-mass-shipment-to-gamers-with-possible-q3-launch/

Source 2: https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20180629PD204.html

  • Nvidia is reportedly holding an inventory of about a million next-gen GPUs, delaying their launch until they can sell their overstock of current gen units.

  • They produced too many current gen cards in response to the crypo craze and, now that it’s died down, they have a glut of unsold units on-hand.

    • Currently, the worldwide graphics card market has an inventory of around several million units

  • Nvidia's next-generation GPUs made using TSMC's 12nm and 7nm processes are expected to be postponed to late fourth-quarter 2018, rather than Q3.

Worldwide PC Shipments just Grew For the First Time in Six Years

Source 1: https://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3881812

Source 2:

  • Worldwide PC shipments totaled 62.1 million units in the second quarter of 2018, a 1.4 percent increase from the second quarter of 2017

  • This is the first quarter of year-over-year global PC shipment growth since the first quarter of 2012.

    • All regions experienced some growth compared with a year ago.

  • Analysts say PC shipment growth in the second quarter of 2018 was driven by demand in the business market, which was offset by declining shipments in the consumer segment

    • "In the consumer space... Consumers are using their smartphones for even more daily tasks, such as checking social media, calendaring, banking and shopping, which is reducing the need for a consumer PC.”

    • "In the business segment, PC momentum will weaken in two years when the replacement peak for Windows 10 passes. PC vendors should look for ways to maintain growth in the business market as the Windows 10 upgrade cycle tails off."

Rumour: Adobe to Launch full version of Photoshop for iPad

Source 1: shermantanker https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/947330-adobe-confirms-a-full-version-of-photoshop-is-coming-to-the-ipad/

Source 2: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-13/adobe-is-said-to-plan-photoshop-for-ipad-in-app-strategy-shift

  • Adobe is planning to launch the full version of its Photoshop app for Apple’s iPad as part of a new strategy to make its products compatible across multiple devices and boost subscription sales.

    • The company shifted all of its apps to the cloud in 2012, launching a new subscription-based business model

    • Adobe has also begun pitching its products to hobbyists, who prefer working on mobile devices rather than PCs.

  • The new versions of the apps will allow users to run full versions of the programs on the iPad and continue edits on different devices

  • The app is slated to hit the market in 2019

    • They will unveil the new app at its annual MAX creative conference in October

    • A new version of Illustrator is in development but a longer way off from being released

Rumour: New Apple products coming this year

Source 1: Nicnac https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/946735-massive-apple-refresh-maybe-on-the-way/

Source 2: https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/07/11/apple-product-pipeline-stacked-with-ipad-macbook-mac-mini-updates-says-analyst

  • TF International Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo issued a new report today, spanning the entire width of Apple's product line.

  • iPad

    • Kuo is expecting a new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro refresh.

    • 10.5 inch iPad increasing to 11 inches.

    • Both are expected to have "full screen" presumably meaning edge-to-edge, and a "removed button design" implying FaceID will be incorporated.

  • iMac

    • A new iMac is expected.

    • The new model is predicted to have a "significant display-performance upgrade" in addition to a processor upgrade.

  • Mac mini

    • update to the processor

    • The line was last updated in October 2014

  • Apple Watch and AirPods

    • the Apple Watch to increase to 40 mm versus 38mm, and 45mm versus 42mm.

    • Both new sizes are expected to have enhanced heart rate detection technologies.

    • new AirPods and the AirPower charging pad to enter mass production in the third calendar quarter of 2018.

  • iPhone

    • Most sources now claim that all three new iPhones will have the TrueDepth camera array and use Face ID

    • There is some speculation that the LCD model will be delayed, due to production yield issues surrounding its touchscreen functionality, but the situation is apparently improving.

    • Bottlenecks in integrating the TrueDepth camera array into the LCD screen are also said to be easing, removing another hurdle that could cause manufacturing delays.

    • Foxconn will continue to be the main iPhone assembler this year, with it said to handle all 5.8-inch OLED units and 80 to 90 percent of the 6.5-inch OLED version, as well as 30 percent of LCD model orders.

    • Pegatron is identified as taking 60 percent of the LCD orders and between 10 and 15 percent of the 6.5-inch OLED model orders, while Wistron makes up the remainder.

  • AMD'S NEXT-GEN GPU architecture dubbed Polaris 30, is rumoured to make its debut at the end of 2018

  • Polaris 30 will be manufactured using the 12-nanometre finFET process and will offer a 20%  boost in performance over the Polaris 20-based GPUs that debuted in 2017.

  • There may not be a 12nm Vega, as Navi will cover the mid-range category

  • GN hired the worst electrician ever who left Live Wires hanging inside of Circuit panels. This caused very loud arcing of electricity- that could be heard outside- that almost burned down the GamersNexus House!

  • Firefighters responded and the fire was prevented from spreading too far, though the entire panel needs to be replaced and there are scorch marks on the wall.

Nintendo Switch chassis weakness = cracking

  • Speculation is that it’s a heat related issue, as most cracks are near the vents.

  • They did a poll and 20% of respondents indicated they have cracks

  • Nintendo UK issued Nintendo Life a statement that said they had not received enough 'confirmed' reports of the issue to take any action at this time, but that anyone with the problem should get in touch immediately.

    • Those who have contacted Nintendo UK for repairs have been billed up to 180 pounds

    • Those doing RMAs in North America appear to be having more success.

YouTube TV subscribers get a free week after World Cup meltdown

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/13/youtube-tv-subscribers-get-a-free-week-after-world-cup-meltdown/

Source 2: https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/11/youtube-tv-goes-down-during-the-world-cup/

  • YouTube TV subscribers usually get the benefit of live sports streaming, but the service went kaput during the World Cup semi-finals, England vs Croatia.

  • Though the service was back on during Extra Time, YouTube has since sent out an email to subscribers promising a free week of YouTube TV service.

    • With most users paying ~$40 a month for the service, that works out to about $10 off their next bill.

    • some users have noted that reaching out directly to customer service lead to them getting a full month for free

  • Curiously, user reports suggest the refund is going out to most, if not all, YouTube TV users — not just those who were watching the game in question.

I can truthfully say that having an iPhone is not status symbol for me. I loved my old flip phone (Sony-Ericsson from 2006). It had wonderful battery life (more than a week on standby); it worked in rugged terrain where, even though no one else had service on their smartphones, I usually had full bars on mine; it just worked and I didn't have to think about it. I would still be using it today if AT&T hadn't shut off their 2G service last January. I got an SE shortly before the shutdown because it is the cheapest model they offer; it is also the smallest-sized model they offer so that I can easily operate it one-handed. I have one so that I can be familiar with iOS, so that I can have some idea of how to help my parents when they have questions or issues with their iPhones and iPads. I am (and have been for a long time) the resident family tech guru. I maintain everyone's computers and the family servers and networking equipment. I am pretty much expected to know the answer when it comes to tech.

Now...for two of my brothers, it is definitely a status symbol — they also have to have Macbooks and Apple Watches. My other brother was vehemently against having anything other than an Android phone...then last year he got a job where he was issued BOTH an iPhone AND an iPad. So now my parents, all my brothers and their wives are all in the Apple ecosystem (to varying degrees).

The fault was with the original ISO that was loaded from VLSC - missing some part of the Windows update mechanism. Issue occurred when you reboot if you had BitLocker.

Apples not the worst however. Wacom is, with their studio pro lineup along with price... Both GPU and CPU are running off of a unit that is about 3 years old. Someone I know was looking at it, I told them to hold off because that hardware is far too old esp for its price.

I guess if you delay updates for too long.

I don't use this to completely disable it though. I do install all updates.

I just set it to option 2 - "Notify for download and notify for install.", so that it won't happen while playing games, or restart when it's not supposed to, and it works for that.
