so again (or still) im torn between oled vs. va

i havent had a tv in years now since i was used to watching everthing on my pc back from student years. now its time and i have 2 TVs im torn between. 

any help suggestion or preferrably even experience is more than welcome.

 

1. LG 55 B7A (B7V in europe) - OLED

Pros:

   + Deep blacks (i get cancer from backlight bleed. literally my biggest fear is glowing borders that should be black when watching 21:9 content)

   + best tv on rtings until replaced by more expensive successor C8

Cons:

   - possible Burn-in

   - not as bright

 

2. Sony 55 X900F (XF9005 in europe) - VA 

Pros: 

   + no Burn-in

   + way brighter

   + best mid range tv on rtings and probably therefore best non-oled for that price

Cons:

   - possible "IPS"-like glow on black (borders)

 

im just not sure how to weigh those factors. and please dont tell me to try them at the local retailer. they are so brightly lit that you woulnt be able to tell low light behaviour

OLED should look pretty good, and if you dont use it to watch football or something else with lots of fixed graphics burn in shouldnt be that big of a issue.

Also dont use it as a computer monitor too.

I had a TN panel, then IPS, then VA and let me tell you. Both TN and IPS had bad bleed for me but VA has zero. The colors especially blacks and whites look better than IPS because the bleed would cause a slight hue shift as well. VA get's my vote. Only negative I have is a bit of ghosting. That said though the OLED panel on my iPhone looks incredible and if I could afford a high end OLED TV I would

I am/was in the same boat as you. I wanted to go for a LG OLED TV but then I read a lot of informations about the burn-ins so I thought **** it.

First of all, the price. OLED TV's are simply too expensive it's not worth it. And if you wanna have the TV in a room where the sun shines strong, no OLED for us. I live in Europe too, Netherlands. So I get confused between the series. Anyway, you might wanna watch this too:

I got the LG 55UJ630V today and no bleed/glow.

 

Local stores are only showing the demo videos, been there. It caught my attention all the OLED TV's out there in stores were in dark rooms.

Fuck this bullshit, I WILL GET my good old plasma TV back.

That's sad to hear.  Makes me curious how burn-in compares with plasma vs OLED panels.

If you want to know, I can tell you because I experienced them.

 

We have two plasma TV's, one is a Samsung we have it since 2009 and other one is LG from 2011.

Both of them have no burn-ins. The LG one, I calibrated it and it have the best colors, skin colors are very real as possible and blacks are blacks.

I'd go with plasma instead of burn-ins. And another pros: plasma TV's have no problems with direct sunlight. The LG one, it had been exposed to direct sunlight heavly in summers, past 7 years. I'll try to get my LG back and I'll keep using it untill it will no longer work.

I have no experience with Sony's 4K TVs, but I do have a LG C7P.  My Mom has one of the Sammy QLED 4K HDR sets that I help setup for her.

Biggest difference I can really tell is the OLED smokes the other TV at doing blacks and the color contrast range is very nice.  Draw back, details are a bit lost in very dark scenes on the OLED.  The room mine is in semi-bright during the day, but so far has not really bother me while watching the TV.  Still, it does look way better if you do turn the lights off and keep outside lights to a minimum.  By what I can tell by the features in the OLED, LG has put a feature into it that suppose to help keep burn-in from occurring or kept at a minimum.

Still, the QLED my Mom has is a very nice TV as well.  Not as amazing in the color department as the OLED, but still a great upgrade from a standard 1080P TV.

 

Best place to look at good break downs of what those TVs can do are websites like rtings.com.

IPS is shit, period. Back in 2014 I bought IPS monitor, black is really light grey, no matter which settings. Now forward to 2018: IPS TV, bleeding light and blacks sucks big time. And it's not my TV btw, we had to upgrade 2 plasma TV's but now it's only one. It's my parents their new IPS TV and they won't bother with the bleeding shit.

 

So if you hate IPS and if you have dark scenes in games like night or room in the game, avoid that panel type.

thanks but that much was clear to me already. they are good though for daylight and wide viewing agle so basically any public viewing or hooka bar tv or you everywhere you have multiple people watching from different angles and maybe the room isnt really dark anyways theyre fine but for my personal living room im not gonna go IPS . still nmot sure about oled vs. va though.

forgot to mention the sony also runs android tv so i might go for that just because thatd be the tipping point that puts it over the edge? idk im struggling for arguments to decent on one of them here

I doubt they are good for daylight and wide viewing because I hardly can see the details in daylight and if I increase Brightness, picture looks shit.

And wide viewing angle also suck, a lot of details are lost and "black" becomes more grey. I'll avoid IPS as a skunk.

 

For you, VA it is then. While OLED got good blacks and contrast, it's not really good for the long run as VA.

I doubt they are good for daylight and wide viewing because I hardly can see the details in daylight and if I increase Brightness, picture looks shit.

And wide viewing angle also suck, a lot of details are lost and "black" becomes more grey. I'll avoid IPS as a skunk.

 

For you, VA it is then. While OLED got good blacks and contrast, it's not really good for the long run as VA.

well yeah ok if the tv ot no brightness to it then its just a crappy panel but if you got decent cd/m² the IPS is definitly better for viewing angles. why do you think most tablets use IPS. dont get me wrong im still also no fan of them but they do have their useful use cases.

I actually have no idea, this IPS panel TV really good shit viewing angle. Are tablets IPS the same as for TV's?

You're not wrong anyway about tablets. It got decent brightness and colors during the daylight but watching horrormovies on it is shit.

 

Are there still VA tv's in Europe? Some are as expensive as OLED 0_0

o.O most of them are. cheapo TVs usually use IPS. decent once VA. and then OLED is pretty new to the market and sort of its own cateory like plasma was.

Anyway, I'd love to buy an OLED tv but my room is too lit and in summers... Not a good idea. OLED hasn't still been matured enough?

well i still reall want the color and blacks but considering im gonna game on it and that if im speding this much money it needs to last a little longer i think ill just get the VA after seeing some test with local dimming enabled im pretty sure black bars are gonna be fine.

I have a C8 OLED and it's amazing.  I've not seen burn-in on any OLED or plasma screen personally (I've owned both); you really do need to have a constant image for a very, very long time.  I would guess that the HUD of a video game wouldn't be an issue if it had view-bob or you didn't play for many hours on-end, but I don't have the experience with that myself.

 

I would suggest making the decision based upon your viewing space.  The brightness difference is considerable.  If the room is relatively dark, go for OLED; if the room is relatively bright (direct sunlight through the window), then go for VA.

Just to add i've had my 65" C7 LG OLED since October last year and use it as a computer monitor, I also view videos, netflix and play games via it but its on probably around 10 hours per day and certainly on the desktop for several hours at a time with no change where the taskbar is and there has been no image retention. I bought it as my very nice Sony 1080p TV went faulty and the OLED really is a big step up picture wise for me, you forget how nice it is to have truly black black's. So vote for OLED here. They are expensive but you pay for what you get.

ok i think im gonna order the sony VA and if there is no noticable black bars when playing 21:9 content und a pitch black room ill keep and if there are then ill exchange it for the OLED.

ohh snap! screw all that philips OLED just dropped in price.

i can get the Philips 55POS9002 for roughly 1100. its OLED but still anroid TV and has ambilight. sadly rtings for some reason doesnt test their TVs but it still sounds pretty good

I would avoid oled in fear of burn-in. It sucks that you pay a lot money for it and one day you notice burn-in damage on your expensive tv. I wouldn't risk buying oled.
