  • After at least 3 separate class action lawsuits, Apple is finally owning up to their crappy keyboards- and they’re doing it in the Appleyest way possible:

    • “Today we launched a keyboard service program for our customers that covers a small percentage of keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models which may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors:

      • keys that feel “sticky” or aren’t responding in a consistent manner.”

  • Users that are experiencing any of these issues can get the servicing done free of charge through Apple stores or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

    • For anyone that has already paid for servicing through Apple will refund the cost of the repair

  • The program will cover eligible MacBook and MacBook Pros for 4 years from the date of purchase.

  • Eligible models:

    • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015)

Bethesda sues Warner Bros

Source 1: SC2Mitch https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/940328-bethesda-drags-warner-bros-to-court-claiming-westworld-mobile-game-uses-fo-shelter-code/

Source 2: https://www.polygon.com/2018/6/22/17492806/bethesda-lawsuit-warner-bros-westworld-mobile-game-fallout-shelter

  • Bethesda Softworks is suing Warner Bros. and Fallout Shelter co-developer ‘Behaviour Interactive’ over the recently released Westworld mobile game, alleging that it’s a “blatant rip-off” of Fallout Shelter.

    • Bethesda is suing for copyright infringement, breach of contract and misappropriating trade secrets.

  • Bethesda alleges that Westworld — released this week for Android and iOS — “has the same or highly similar game design, art style, animations, features and other gameplay elements” as Fallout Shelter.

    • Fallout Shelter was originally released in 2015 for mobile devices.

    • The game was later ported to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

  • Bathesda says the game uses “the same copyrighted computer code created for Fallout Shelter in Westworld,” alleging that a bug evident in an early version of Fallout Shelter (which was later fixed) also appears in Westworld.

    • Behaviour breached its contract with Bethesda and utilized its restricted access to Bethesda’s intellectual property, including Bethesda’s copyrighted code, trade secrets, and other rights to make a new game on the cheap.

Huge Update re: Fatal Uber Accident in March

Source 1: Spotty https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/940284-driver-of-self-driving-uber-involved-in-fatal-collision-was-watching-the-voice-at-time-of-crash/

Source 2: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-uber-selfdriving-crash/uber-driver-was-streaming-hulu-show-just-before-self-driving-car-crash-police-report-idUSKBN1JI0LB

  • The last time we reported on this on WAN show, the theory was that the self-driving Uber’s ‘safety driver’ was looking down at the center console, which displays notifications to drivers.

  • NOW a police report has been issued that states the driver, Rafaela Vasquez,  was streaming a television show on her phone until about the time of a fatal crash.

    • The report said police concluded the crash would have been “entirely avoidable” if Vasquez had been paying attention.

    • Vasquez looked up just 0.5 seconds before the crash, after keeping her head down for 5.3 seconds

  • Police obtained records from Hulu which showed Vasquez’s account was playing the TV talent show “The Voice” for about 42 minutes on the night of the crash, ending at 9:59 p.m., which “coincides with the approximate time of the collision,”

  • Police submitted their findings to local prosecutors, who will make a determination on whether to file criminal charges.

    • Vasquez could face charges of vehicular manslaughter.

  • Uber shuttered its autonomous car testing program in Arizona after the incident, and says it plans to begin testing elsewhere this summer...

YouTube introduces paid subscriptions and merchandise

Source 2: https://youtube.googleblog.com/2018/06/vidcon-2018-helping-creators-earn-more.html

    • Channel Memberships have already been available for a select group of creators on YouTube as Sponsorships.

    • Will soon be expanding this to eligible channels with more than 100,000 subscribers on YouTube under the new name Channel Memberships.

      • They hope to bring it to even more creators in the coming months.

  • Also adding merch stores to Youtube:

    • YT has joined forces with Teespring so creators can choose from over 20 merchandise items to customize and sell via a shelf on their channel.

    • This is now available to all eligible U.S.-based channels with over 10,000 subscribers

      • Expanding in the future

300,000 GPUs returned to Nvidia

Source 1: Master Disaster https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/939592-nvidia-have-a-huge-inventory-excess-problem-300000-gpus-returned-from-a-single-board-partner/

Source 2: https://seekingalpha.com/article/4182662-nvidia-appears-gpu-inventory-problem

  • Tech news site SemiAccurate just published an article on why Nvidia has delayed their new gaming GPUs.

  • Nvidia has apparently overestimated pent-up gaming demand and underestimated the impact of declining mining demand.

  • They have agreed to take back 300k GPUs from a 'top 3' Taiwan OEM.

  • The report also cites Nvidia aggressively buying GDDR5 as evidence that they now have an excess stock of lower-end GPUs that need to be made into boards.

Online retailers will now have to collect sales tax in the US

Source 1: SteveGrabowski0 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/939891-online-retailers-will-now-have-to-collect-sales-tax-in-the-us/

Source 2: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-21/states-can-require-internet-tax-collection-supreme-court-rules-jiomtl5c

  • The Supreme Court says US states can force online shoppers to pay sales tax, clearing the way for major changes in the world of e-commerce.

  • The 5-4 ruling Thursday is a win for states, which said they were losing out on billions of dollars annually due to a 1992 Supreme Court decision that affected online sales tax collections.

  • Under the previous law, businesses were required to collect sales tax only when shipping products to a state where they had a physical presence, such as a warehouse or office.

    • Customers were generally supposed to pay the tax to the state themselves if they were not charged by the merchant, but the vast majority did not.

  • Lots of taxes will be generated by Amazon sales, a large part of whose business consists of sales made through other merchants operating on the site.

    • Amazon collects sales tax on all items it sells directly,

    • Third-party purchases are taxed in just two states, Washington and Pennsylvania.

    • Those purchases could make up a third or more of Amazon's revenue, by some estimates.

Intel CEO resigned after 'consensual relationship' with employee

Source 1: SC2Mitch https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/939858-intel-ceo-resigns-after-consensual-relationship-with-employee-following-investigation-from-board/

Source 2: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/21/intel-ceo-brian-krzanich-to-step-down-bob-swan-to-step-in-as-interim-ceo.html

  • Intel has announced that Brian Krzanich has resigned as CEO following an investigation into a "consensual relationship with an Intel employee"

    • Krzanich has also left the board

  • Chief financial officer Robert Swan will step in as interim CEO

  • Krzanich violated a policy that said managers cannot have relationships with people who report to them either directly or indirectly.

    • The relationship ended and took place "some time back,"

      • Probably an affair

  • Krzanich's total compensation topped $21 million last year, and the company paid for his transportation and residential security.

  • Intel's stock has risen about 120 percent during Krzanich's tenure as CEO

Local apple store wanted to charge me £680 to replace the keyboard on my late 2016 MacBook Pro for a "sticky" 0 key. I'll be very happy to speak to them again and get the repair/replacement for free.

Asshats. First and last mac if I can help it. Only bought this to enable me to better support my clients using macs.

Shouldn't the Intel CEO be fined or investigated in some way for dumping stock right before the Meltdown/Spectre thing came out?

Still only bad Apple news. New iPhone models confirmed but not in WAN show. As if the Intel CEO getting it on is bigger news than the iPhone X+.
