The 8700k doesn’t come with a stock cooler. I have an AIO to pair with it. Would I be able to cycle through to make sure the system posts without putting the cooler on, or do I need to have that on in order to post?

Would it be detrimental if I didn’t do it?

Never force a boot without any cooling method being used for the CPU specially an i7 8700k that heats up real quick, you will be putting yourself at the risk of frying it.

Yup, def dont do it, put a cooler on it.

I would go find the video of Lman holding the heatsinks on the cpu. He did do that, check it out! Soaring with the eagles all week long

I've done it a lot of times on CPUs, depends on your level of experience and how big your balls are, I've killed a hell of a lot of hardware (recently an i7 7700K, Foxconn Blackops and GTX 980) but if you just wanna see if it posts, stick your hand on the IHS and boot it up, you'll feel the IHS get warm, but it shouldn't burn you, if it does hit the power switch on the PSU, you should move your hand onto that powerswitch as soon as you pressed the button to boot the system. However there really is no need, it's not like TIM is that expensive

Yours faithfully

It might post, but temps are gonna climb pretty quick unless you live in Antarctica. Definitely put a cooler on.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Or this:

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Another one of those replies where I have to ask. WHY would you reply to a genuine question that has already been answered truthfully multiple times hours later with something completely irrelevant and unhelpful?

i would not risk it but i've done it before with a little metal can with very cold water in it.

long story short i needed to test a CPU and didn't have a cooler in house and i found a metal can, filled it up with cold water put some thermal paste on the CPU with the can on top, booted into the bios, bios showed around 50/60C and that was it really. ( ran it for 30 seconds to test if it booted and it was fine )

but i wouldn't do it without a cooler no..

Why do people buy super cars and then gamble racing it with no experience?

clearly OP didn't know the answer and that's why he asked, that's why the forum is here to help people.

Alright thanks! I didn’t have an air cooler so I wanted to see if I’d get by without having to put the AIO all together and mess with thermal paste. Would the AIO come with more thermal paste to reapply after POSTing? It’s my first build so I’m just trying to figure things out.

only thing you have to put together with a AIO is putting fans on it.

well you don't need extra paste if you leave the cooler on, i would say put in the CPU and mount the AIO and leave it on and don't remove it again, you can just install the motherboard with the cooler attached at once in your case.
