intel 8700 or ryzen 2700x

so i was wondering which cpu i should get, i have a gtx 1080, 16gb 3000 and mhz ram, i know ryzen benefits from the high speed ram, so i would like to know which one will last longer, since im buying the best there is to not have to switc cpu in a couple off years with new graphics cards

It's a crapshoot to try to estimate which one will last longer.

The i7 8700 is on a dead-end platform whereas the 2700X is not. So if you intend on switching out for a Zen 2 or successor CPU, there is that.

What games do you play and do you care about high refresh rate gaming? Will you do anything else besides gaming on your PC?

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

well, i spent 450 dollars for a 144hz monitor with g-sync so that something, also i mostly play things like roblox, minecraft, cod bo3, gta 5, arma 3, rust, and other things like that

If you game primarily get the 8700k, no questions asked. Also, Ryzen and RAM incompatibilities are an all to common problem. Just cause you have 3000mhz RAM doesn't mean you'll be able to run it at its full rated speed. Trust me I own both CPU's.

If you are after productivity I'd go for the 2700x.

Well if you want the best (for now) in gaming, the 8700 is still a better choice. But as some people have mentioned above, LGA 1151v2 is a dead platform now, and it won't be supported in the future (probably). I'd say go for a 2700X, as AMD is going to support AM4 socket for a long time, and you will still be able to upgrade in the future, while with Intel you have to pay a hefty premium to upgrade to their latest and greatest (as always).

The 8700k is still a productivity beast. I have used my skylake 6700k for a long time in 3D design work and it held up fine.

I say go with the 2700x, but I'm biased... towards the 8700 because I have one. Honestly the 2700x gives something like 95% of the gaming performance of the 8700 in today's games while they don't even benefit from the extra 4 threads of the Ryzen, meaning it will only get better from here.

Not to mention

1) You'd need to buy a cooler for the 8700 (I own one. The 8700 throttles hard under intense workloads like Cinebench on the stock cooler)

2) They cost the same

3) Z370 is already a dead platform

4) The 2700x will have far better resale value than the 8700 since non-k chips from intel never hold their value past 2 generations after their launch.

Sure the 8700 may be technically better, but you're talking about the difference between 130fps and 140fps. Who even cares at that point. You'll never notice the difference. I'm biased though... I have an 8700. So if I'M saying the 8700 makes no sense anymore despite people's tendency to want to justify their purchase, then it's probably true.

Ryzen has some memmory compatibility issue, but Ryzen does not really benefit past 2933 mhz as that satisfies the bandwidht of the infinity fabric.

Lol here you go again with that 95% figure, which has already been proven to be incorrect.

Games aren't even close to maxing out a 8700 thread wise, let alone a 2700X. For all intents and purposes, the 8700 is the better gaming CPU now and will likely remain so the next few years - it's not like suddenly in 2019 games will need an 8C/16T CPU to run well.

Z370 is a dead platform? Has there been confirmation that the upcoming 8 core CFL chips won't be compatible on existing Z370 motherboards?

I know Intel isn't exactly great with their backwards compatibility, but Z170 could run both Skylake and Kabylake CPUs, and the Z97 could run both Haswell and Broadwell CPUs, just as an example.

I see people say a lot of what they *think* will happen, without actually quoting any sources. Z370 may very well be a 'dead end' - it could also work with 8 core CFL with a BIOS update. None of us know the answer to this, so we should stop pretending we have a crystal ball when we can all only speculate.

Finally, AMD and resale value... Sorry but Intel holds the crown here, even non K i7s tend to hold (unreasonably) good resale value for some reason.

I've compared the used market and a 4790, for example, costs the same or more than a Ryzen 1600 still, which is kinda crazy if you ask me.

1) Sorry, 93% of the gaming performance. I rounded up. Like I said before, we're talking about the difference between 130fps and 140fps. I doubt anybody could tell the difference in real world gaming.

2) All we need is for games to be using more than 6 cores (which they aren't because in gaming the 8600k=8700k in almost all games) because after 6 cores Intel is hitting hyperthreading while AMD still has 2 more cores to use before hitting SMT. That time's coming soon as many games use upwards of 80% of an 8600k/8400.

3) They're launching the Z390 chipset with the 8 core CFL cpus, probably due to power delivery restrictions on the Z370 boards. It's possible they're compatible, but I wouldn't count on it. Also even if they do support 8 core CFL cpus, there is longer support for X470 with Zen 2 coming next year, likely with 12 core cpus.

4) Being listed at that price doesn't mean it's sold at that price.

You should go with the i7-8700.

You have a 144hz monitor, so you want every frame you can muster to take full advantage of it.

In high frame rate gaming, Intel wins, period.

I tend to say unless you only and exclusively play CS:GO competitively, then go for the intel chip. in any other scenario take the ryzen.
