I bought a 7700k last black friday and a motherboard and I wonder if I should of gone for the 8700k.. Is the 7700k good enough? Thanks

As long as you dont do anything else while gaming, 7700k is good enough. I mean, there are only 2 CPUs that can reliably beat it in games.

What resolution do you game at? What GPU are you hosting? What is the refresh rate of your monitor?

Overclocked too, the 7700k shows similar, maybe within ~5% performance of the 8700k, because intel ipc is great in games and not many games use 6 cores at 5 ghz versus 4 cores at 5 ghz

If you only run the game it'll be almost as good as the i7 8700k still because most games are optimized fully for 4c/8t nowadays which was the normal i7, the main thing that has been happening is that it uses 4 cores so well that system, windows other background applications all started using resources that otherwise could be used by the game where if you could have a powerful single thread CPU with more cores it did help.

 

HEDT CPUs though were always a generation behind, until now with coffee lake we have a 6c/12t CPU with the best single thread and that is why it takes the lead considerable, but this CPU is just the start of this new trend, it'll take a lot of time for software catch up fully to where you'll be limited significantly.

A 7700k will have no trouble keeping up with your 1080 at 1440p....ever.

The 7700K is pretty much dead even with the 8700K in many games, especially older games that won't use more than a few threads at a time. It is only in the current crop of games where the 8700K comes ahead, and that lead still isn't a big one.

 

If you play at a resolution such as 1440p or 4k, the difference will be even smaller.

 

Don't worry about it.
