Types of storage?

Just wanted to ask,What are the types of storage for a PC? Because while watching a video i heard the guy say boot up drive and it made me wonder if there were other drives which serves specific purposes for the pc? and should i buy different types of drives?

You have a boot drive which is where your operating system is at and then you have storage drives where you'll dump the heavier files.

 

What most people nowadays do is buy a good SSD to use as boot drive since it'll speed up the OS and your main applications like web browser and such and then have a common 7200rpm HDD as storage for those games, videos, musics and so on that are heavier and won't benefit as much from the faster speeds of the SSD.

 

This way you have the best of all worlds for the best money management possible.

 

There are RAID configurations as well but those are pretty much ignorable to the average user.

SSD-Solid State Drive: Install windows on it and games that you like fast loading

HDD- Hard Disk Drive: Slower but much cheaper so install everything else on here

 

Then there are things like hybrid drives with a tiny 8gb SSD cache but those aren't worth it

 

There are also NVME SSDs which are the fastest you can get. Like 3.5Gb/s fast

 

There is also tape storage but that's used just for backups now days

Just keeping this here as a Intel Optane is pretty pointless, just guy a SSD if you can afford it, I particularly went with 2 480gb SanDisk G26 on storage because those perform pretty well already while being very affordable.

 

You could get a NVMe SSD for boot even though it'll hardly make a difference compared to common SATA3, over all I'd advise like a really good boot drive such as a Samsung Evo 850 and then a couple of cheaper SSDs for storage... if you feel a common HDD isn't enough... just don't waste money on Optane.

SSD would always be better. The optane just automatically houses just your most used files, the other stuff is still on the hdd and doesn't speed up

Boot drives refers to SSDs. There are two types: SATA, and PCIe. That's because most people dont have the budget to use SSDs solely in their system.

 

SATA ones are still limited by relatively small bandwidth SATA offers, but it is still better than HDD in both speed and latency which makes system feel much more responsive. 

 

PCIe provide much faster transfer speed with the same latency as SATA SSDs. The operating system dont benefit from the high transfer speed so it's not a must-have. NVMe SSDs are also a type of PCIe SSDs.

These shouldnt be mixed up with size names, namely M.2, 2.5" and PCIe. there are SATA SSDs in M.2 form factor, but not the other way around. They perform the same as 2.5" SSDs, so not worth going for unless space is really tight, like one of those mITX builds.

 

Optane SSDs are waste of money. They help improve HDD speeds sure, but they dont raise it to SSD level and it is more expensive.

There's quite a lot of marketing and misinformation around for both NVMe and Optane. 

 

For booting, gaming and most everyday uses, NVMe is no faster than your standard SATA SSD. NVMe excels at sequential read/writes, which helps for transferring large files (provided the storage you're transferring to can keep up, or if you use a RAM cache for writes), loading large files into RAM (things like video editing) and having multiple devices/sources accessing it at once. Most people won't notice a difference between NVMe and SATA SSDs in real world performance. 

 

As for Optane.... It's mostly marketing. It has some benefits, particularly for writing data, but it doesn't make HDDs suddenly perform like an SSD. It's better to get a dedicated SSD and store what you need to launch fast on it, that way you actually have control over it, while Optane and caches in general just manage themselves, which can make them kind of useless.

Boot drive is just slang for the drive that the OS is installed onto BTW, not a specific device. Therefore the "boot drive" can also be the storage drive etc.

I went for an M.2 drive for Windows and programs, then a normal SSD which currently just houses my GTA V install (And anything else I want to run nice and fast). Then I have standard mechanical hard drives for my terabytes of media files (served up by my Plex server).

HDD - the classic mechanical drive , usually SATA (~ 550 MB read/write)

SSD - solid state drive - SATA (same speed)

SSD on M.2 connector using pci-e lanes to transfer data (nvme drives) - either pci-e x2 or x4 mode  [ x2 or x4 ] x 500 MB/s for pci-e v2.0  or [ x2 or x4 ] x ~970 MB/s for pci-e v3.0

 

SSHD - HDD with a tiny amount of flash memory used to cache the often used data - for all purposes treat it as mechanical hard disk

 

Optane - SSD Drives using a different kind of memory chips than what SSD drives use,  still just as fast as SSD drives because you're limited by interface speed (sata or nvme/pci-e lanes

benefit is more endurance (memory chips last longer) and slightly lower latency (if you don't read big files so transfer speed is not important, but you read or write a lot more very small amounts of stuff within a second compared to SSD drives - like you can read 50 thousand small thumbnails in a second compared to reading 40 thousand with SSD drives)

 

SAS  -  like old SCSI drives but instead of using those ribbon cables they send the data through a SATA like cable

 

There's also hard drives with SATA Express (google it, basically 2 sata and 2 pci-e lanes in a connector, giving you speed higher than single SATA port)
