I liked Vessel.. I like Floatplane too. But Vessel had a lot of awesome content from when I signed up.

At least that's how I received them, written over VHS copies of Adam Sandler movies with a sticker on top with video title in marker.

Imagine my surprise when whole room watercooling part 2 ended and cut to Mr Deeds.

The reason I brought it up in the first place is I was reading some FB thread about the YouTube murder thing and although I didn't really follow each post I saw someone mention that they would probably leave YouTube for another platform. I guess he ran a YT channel but my point to him was there really isn't another platform and I briefly thought of Vessel and how it was probably the best alternative I'd seen, albeit only if you followed multiple large creators.

Idk why people always act like there isn't another platform when in fact there are several.  Vimeo is one that immediately comes to mind.  It has all the same features one would hope for afaik - good image quality, subscriptions, comments, like/dislike system, etc. and I'm sure there are others too.  I'm not sure how their ads work but I also imagine it's similar to YouTube.  I'm sure people could find creative ways to use Twitch as well.  Then of course for extra monitization there's always patreon, and for the lucky few who will make it into Floatplane, that's an obvious one as well.

Well maybe saying there is NO other platform isn't quite correct, but let's be honest...there's no other platform with the same userbase. Even if Vimeo and Dailymotion had the same monetization rates, w/o the userbase it just isn't going to be profitable. Since those platforms aren't as big as YT it's likely the monetization isn't anywhere near what one could acquire on YT

True that the growth won't be nearly the same, but if you already had a large channel and had to move, you could just say "everyone go over here" and the majority of your audience would move with you - at least the ones who actually watched your videos, so you'd only be "trimming the fat" lol

 

And if a few big names did that, I can imagine it starting a trend that brings in more and more people over time which might solve the growth issue.

I'm surprised companies like Amazon, Facebook, or some other huge ass company hasn't tried to make a competitor. Besides Vimeo and Dailymotion I can't think of any platform that's even tried to compete. Facebook has FB video but it's not really competing since it has to be used on FB.

Well Amazon owns Twitch which could easily be made into a normal video platform as well.  Honestly it's live stuff that's the hard part as far as I know :P

Honestly I think it did. With companies like that, a lot of the time they are founded with the hope that they get acquired by a massive company (Verizon in this case.)
