Fortnite on Mobile earns $1.5m in cosmetics in 4 days

ItsMitch

Epic Games seems to be pissing away money recently as they clearly don't need it.

In less than a week, Fortnite has become a bona fide sensation on mobile, topping the iPhone download charts in more than 40 countries despite still being invite-only. Now, thanks to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data, we have a first measure of how successful the game has been so far on the revenue front. According to our estimates, Fortnite has already grossed more than $1.5 million worldwide on iOS, with $1 million of that earned during the first 72 hours after IAPs went live. This places the game well ahead of its primary rivals in the burgeoning mobile survival game genre during the same post-launch period.

They also provided a graph comparing Fortnite to Knives Out and Rules of Survival.  I'm pretty shocked that they earned so much money so fast but I suppose that people actually want different skins.

Epic Games is making quite the mad bank recently, 1.5 million in the past 4 days is fairly wild. Epic Games have also released all of their skins and Paragon data to their Unity Store which is worth more than a million. Who needs money? Not Epic Games it seems. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Epic is going too far? Or do you think people need to stop paying so much money for cosmetics?

Oh hey @PCGuy_5960 I saw your status :P

If my son ever said: "Dad, I want a loot box"...

Me: "You're dead to me."

I love playing video games, but the more I learn about how the industry manipulates it's customers to make money, the more I'm turned off by the whole thing. I used to play any game I could get my hands on, and now I find myself not letting my son play a game if I feel there is an ethical or moral issue with the way the game is monetized.

Also, this game is incredibly stupid. The constant security issues with consoles and the FTP bringing children (even as young as 6) completely turn me off to this Team Fortress style bastardization of battle-royale. I cannot believe the sheeple are spending money on this. I want to go back to the days of Streets of Rage and Shinobi on Sega Genesis...

Mind expanding more on the security issues with consoles?

My son went over to a friends house and they let him play this game, even when I specifically stated that I do not let my son play it. He's 8. I don't really care about the "cartoonish" violence, but more the squalking children on chat. The excuse from the parents was that the chat was monitored by them.. So I looked into it. i have a PS4, but I don't game on it. It's used for Minecraft and Little Big Planet, and he only plays with an offline account. Apparently PS4 doens't have anything like Discord for private chat. There is one that PS4 has native for private party, but apparently, Fortnite has a glitch where your private chat can be intruded upon by others. Something that hasn't been fixed yet....

I'll find my sources I read up on and post later.

Impressive. With that kind of revenue, a company would be stupid not to include something like that in their game.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised. It's a mobile game. They're generally all focused around micro transactions.

This one, seeing as it's gotten such wide coverage already, had a huge advantage when it came to sales.

See, I think that thinking is flawed. I'd bet that most of the money put into these games is from adults, not from children.

Looking at the games my friend plays (who, btw, puts in $30 to $50 into most games he plays) and there are many people spending upwards of thousands of dollars on said games. Those aren't kids.

My rants are usually more in line with political ineptitude than over loot boxes, but yes they do annoy the shit out of me too :D

I would like to see them come up with something a little less tired, and not so obvious money grab... like maybe something that enhances the gameplay without making it pay to win at the same time. But they normally save those for future games.. I always think that 2K missed out on expanding the borderlands universe... they could have had some brilliant add-ons to cover some other worlds I think. Maybe even team deathmatch type thing. The settings were brilliant and just ripe for some open-world PvP with vehicles etc... I know it would ahve kind of been GTA, but I looked at it more of a mad max/dystopian future.

I hope these trends of lootboxes die soon, as they IMO are ruining gaming for many people, it's another kind of class system in a way... can you imagine the playgrounds now? "Johnny can't afford to buy lootboxes, ahahahah, what a pleb!" - I would hate to see this happening :(

As i said, people can spend their money on what they like, it's their money.. but I find it stupid when it's cosmetic things. It's not rational, I think things I do other people would consider stupid too, I am fully aware of that.

I have friends that literally still go down the pub every weekend and spend like £200 and think nothing of it, even though that is two thirds of their entire income for the week... and then have no money, literally down to their last £5 to last them the rest of the week again until payday the next friday. I still like them, they're my friends, and to be honest I was similar in my teens and early twenties or so... but I can still call it stupid, as they think it's stupid of me to save what money I have for my "computer stuff", lol :D

Yeah, as long as people spend all their money on these battle royale games, devs are only going to make more. Ironic how micro transactions are fine, but everyone hates lootboxes which aren't any better lol. PUBG is just boring to me,and Fortnite seems like a buggy mess but I haven't played it.

I'm not calling them sheople for spending money on something they like. That amount of money in cosmetic items that as no functionality is crazy to me. Doesn't make much sense. Yes, I purchased one costumer in RS6 because I like my character and got the Division outfit for Frost. But I don't go spending Willy Nilly.

I've never played this game, but I'm assuming the items are from Lootboxes? From a game I'd consider a fad. People can spend what they want where they want. I agree, many people would disagree with sending money on PC components. However, I'm not buying a lootbox in hopes of getting a good processor or good case.

I do not agree with lootbox style micro transactions in any form for any game. When people get caught up in the hyper of purchasing these to get the one thing they want, that's where I draw the line of craziness.
