Turkey's Government proceeds to ban ProtonMail

ItsMitch

Source: ProtonMail - A few days old :(

This is pretty bad for Turkish users of ProtonMail if you're using some ISP's. ProtonMail did also provide ways of bypassing the Block but it has yet to receive any kind of official comment from the Turkish Government nor Vodafone. This is the first ever time a country has widely blocked Protonmail and they believe that this could continue.

Quote

Our support team first became aware of connectivity problems for Turkish ProtonMail users starting on Tuesday. After further investigation, we determined that protonmail.com was unreachable for both Vodafone Turkey mobile and fixed line users. Since then, we have also received some sporadic reports from users of other Turkish ISPs. At one point, the issue was prevalent in every single major city in Turkey. After investigating the issue along with members of the ProtonMail community in Turkey, we have confirmed this is a government-ordered block rather than a technical glitch. Internet censorship in Turkey tends to be fluid so the situation is constantly evolving. Sometimes ProtonMail is accessible, and sometimes it is unreachable. For the first time ever though, we have confirmed that ProtonMail was subject to a block, and could face further issues in the future.

This is a fairly bad look for Turkey but It's no surprise since it's crackdown on internet freedom. ProtonMail does strongly believe this order was issued by the Turkish Government.  They have gone on to provide ways of bypassing the block in pursuit of internet freedoms and privacy for all.  Fairly sad either way for all ProtonMail users in Turkey. I guess Turkey wants you to use Gmail where they can just give an order to Google to hand over your data.

Turkey has yet to provide a public comment on the matter, along with Vodafone Group.

another one to the list, I am kinda used to these "blocks" now its been like 12 years since they first introduced these blocks with porn sites first then followed by youtube and wikipedia, however I can still access protonmail with my ISP, website is not officially blocked in Turkey I am certain that is just Vodafone biry3o.jpg

(text with yellow background says that: there is no court order to block or restrict access to this website)

that was a very specific case, that happened when erdogans shit was leaked (2014-2016) and during the coup attempt (but then again I was still able to connect vpns that I used during that time, including mine)

Any Proton user can tell me about proton mail is it any good in privacy protection or its just a fad?

Last time i tried it they were asking for $ subscriptions or something so i ignored it.

All countries seem to be moving to a police surveillance state with the help of the internet, hopefully blockchain technology can cut corners around all these laws and get ahead before its too late and internet is fully controlled.

Well, their servers are located in Switzerland so they fall under Swiss privacy laws which are a lot harder to get through than the US. Proton do offer a free service for all but if you feel like supporting the project, you may.

After doing some research about protonmail (this post is only one of several recommendations for the service) I just now got a protonmail account and am now forwarding all mail received by my gmail to it. Thanks Vodafone! You played yourself with your anti-privacy policy. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

They do but a few VPNs managed to circumvent Turkey’s VPN blocks.
