Still got to add the results - (over 5 years later). But these are the drives that I had tested (since then I've gotten some others working that I had thought were dead):

The difference going from 5400RPM to 7200RPM used to make:

People in the early 2000's would shit themselves if they saw how fast something like my 8TB WD drive is. Fuggin casual 200MB/s sequentials on a single 5400RPM drive.

In my database of tests I have 3 or 4 drives that hit that speed.

Edit: a Toshiba, WD, and Seagate that get close.

All are low end or used, my only high end drives are pretty old, the Hitachi 2tb and 500gb IDE are the high end ones. I have more 2tb/4tb Hitachis I haven't benchmarked.

Largest standard size hard drive versus smallest standard size hard drive (5.25 Bigfoot and 1" CF Microdrive)

image.thumb.png.e33c96deab80f29032f0b5f2b7216b99.png

The Bigfoot's spindle alone weighs more than the entire drive, and the spindle clamp's radius is a few mm more than the entire platter size.

Those actually aren't the largest and smallest standard hard drive sizes. 8-inch and 0.85-inch hard drives were a thing (the 0.85" HDD was used in some phones, I believe).

Should have clarified - PC standard drives, AFAIK the 8in. drives weren't used in IBM PC or later machines. And this is an 0.85 inch drive with those extra little legs where the CF card connector would go - the actual mechanism is the same size, it's a bit larger overall though if you count that. Should have been more clear, my bad

Took me 2x WD Black 640GB drives in RAID0 to get that level of performance in a system with SATA 150. A single SSD couldn't do the sequential speed but the access times being so so low and the read/write not changing across the platters diameter made it 'faster'.

Been upgrading my childhood PC recently, it's a Dell XPS Studio 435t / 9000. Has an Intel Core i7-920 : ATI Radeon HD 4670 (Just upgraded it to a GTX 670 I had lying around) : 12GB DDR3 1066Mhz : Samsung 870 Evo 250gb + WD Black HDD 750gb. Just repasted both the CPU & GPU with Noctua NT-H1 and I'm gonna get a proper sound card and another 3tb WD Blue HDD for it (gonna use it as a media / backup system). And before anyone even thinks to complain about me owning an Alienware now, blame the GPU shortage 🙂

Picked this guy out of a recycled PC at work: A Quadro FX580. Was suuuuuuper dirty when I got it (and still is after a brief dusting). Am I ever going to need a card this old and slow? Almost certainly not. Did I get it because it's old but also a single slot blower which makes it double neat? Probably.

Actually i7 first gen laptops are very popular here for selling,as 2670qm are too.

So I don't think that is too old..

Yeah like 10 years but I would not call it retro.

Laptop with like 2670qm costs here like aroundish 200 euros.

I wish I could know where is my Pentium I rig to show off for you guys.

If it is not in a car garage then probably long time in some dumpster.

I feel sorry if I had thrown it.

Please do not take offence for my apparent confusion or rudeness,it's not intent me to be like that,it's just my BPD,be nice to me,and I'll return twice better,be rude and usually I get easly pissed of...I'll try to help anyone here,as long as it's something I dealt with, and even if you think I'm rude or not polite, forgive me,  it's not me it's my BPD.

Thanks for understanding.

My step dad just found this curio in his box of bits.  It's got two round porta labelled IR and Mouse and two USB 2.0 (2.0 is a guess from the black plastic.)  Looks like it plugs in to a 17 pin header with the bottom middle pin blanked.PXL_20220520_143907459.thumb.jpg.e60b309c670acf0afce5e70b966f1b3d.jpg

Eh, you can't really use the color of the plastic to judge the USB revision with 1.1 and 2.0. I've seen quite a fair few 1.1 boards/accessories use black plastic.

Those actually sell pretty well on ebay.

Most old used boards are missing that part.

It's not car payment money, but 6-pack money.

Nice CPUs! Though, it's a shame to have thrown them away. You could definitely sell them for a pretty penny, and there are tons of retro tech enthusiasts (me included) who would really want those processors!

I live in another country and shipping would be a pain. People thought I was crazy for selling the CPUs

The guts are relatively new (4th gen i7), but I've had and used this case for literally 20 years. She's my current dedicated late 90s through mid 00s build that can still occasionally rise to the level of some semi-modern stuff if she needs to / I'm too lazy to switch to my more modern PC.

TNT 2 Vanta (with M64 core clocks, SiS 305 or 3DLabs Oxygen VX1 for my Win98 gaming rig. They'll be paired with my Diamond Monster 3DII (and a second Voodoo2 when I find the SLI cable):

Also moved to 2x 5400rpm HDD until the "new" case arrives. Quantum Fireball EX and Seagate U5.

Going with the Oxygen VX1 - my Pentium III 650+440BX-2 would be a more appropriate pairing than the Sempron 2800+/AthlonXP 2400:

I have a Pentium III 933 that I pulled (with its board) from a Dell Dimension. Would you be interested in it?

I take it that it's socket 370...in which case no. I've got 3x Penium III 1000 (2x matching from my dual socket board, 1x very early one that was technically vapourware and isn't actually stable at 1GHz), a Pentium III 667 and a Slot 1 Pentium III 650 - and if its Slot 1 maybe though the only 2x 133MHz FSB Slot 1 boards that I have are either slow (pentium iii 1000 crippled to 800MHz performance - Jetway 994AN-L) or freeze while booting due to the BIOS antivirus crap that was popular in the late 90's.

I need to do similar and repair two older macbooks for my GF. I also may be in over my head.
