But then, there's not really much I'm ever in a rush to do 😜

The only time you should say 'no Rush' is when making a road trip playlist or hiring a wedding DJ.

There's a lot of old tech around my house, figured I'd post some of it here:

PowerBooks/MacBook Pro 17" mid 2006:

Spoiler

(Top to bottom: Wall Street G3, Pismo G3, MacBook Pro 17" Late 2006:ZIcmCzh.jpeg

DQ5jolZ.jpeg

xVkuNHV_d.webp?maxwidth=760&fidelity=grandI plan on upgrading the Pismo. I'm not allowed to use the Wall Street, but I'm going to try and renegotiate this with my father. All three of these PowerBooks were purchased off of the Bush campaign. I'm planning on picking up a G4 at some point, as well.

Update: Can't open up the G3s at all due to one of them apparently being used by George Bush himself. We don't know which one that is, my father lost track of them. I'll just get a G4, that will do much better for browsing the web due to it not having the low 8MB of VRAM. I can also get Leopard on one.

Notice how I said three PowerBooks?

mbVYJJb.jpeg Here's another Wall Street in storage. Its screen was smashed in years ago, and my father used the insurance payout towards the MBP. The hinges have given out as well. Until a few days ago, I thought this was our only Wall Street. I was then told that the one that is in better cosmetic condition had broke and was recycled. I then found out that he didn't get rid of any of them, prompting me to try and boot the latter PowerBook. It has fanspin, but the screen stays blank. Oddly, the keyboard was left unsecured before the laptop was stored...

Random old tech:

120GB external HDD:

Old Maxtor external HDD:

Old FireWire Webcam:

A whopping 15 GB external HDD!

Old Dells and game consoles (the XPS 420 that's powered on is my NAS):

Sorry for the low quality photos, a lot of this stuff is in the unfinished part of my basement, which has bad lighting and tight areas.

TRS-80:

Took it out for a little a few years ago. May try using it again, however this computer is 41 years old and I don't want to kill it.

My D630 "Chromebook". Not really that retro, but here:

There was even more old tech in my house, but a lot of it was eCycled. I really wish my father kept his Mac clone in particular.

The pictures should  be fixed now. If not: https://imgur.com/gallery/HqwQW3b

Main PC: Ryzen 1600 @4GHz, 16GB 2933 MHz DDR4, 1060 6GB blower card.

Laptop: ThinkPad T580 (i5, iGPU, FHD, 16GB RAM, 256 SSD+1TB HDD). Used with both the regular and extended-run batteries (RIP power bridge).

Crap...

Here's an alblum that contains all of the pictures in the post. Due to the 20MB file limit, I'd have to spam the thread to make this work right, unless there's a better solution?

Edit: I put the link in the OG post. Maybe that will fix it?

Edit 2: Should be fixed once and for all. If not: https://imgur.com/gallery/HqwQW3b

Actually, it does run doom.

It can even run Quake at some level of playability, although aiming with an accupointer is even worse than playing on mobile.

Used to make my own, that took a steady hand, cutting a flat 40pin ribbon cable into individual strands, but I got to be pretty good at that. Was handy when cable management in those old cases basically didn't exist.

It's best to use Ultra ATA cables

This one in the photo is commercial grade IT rounded ATA cables.  I got stacks of them for builds and repairs.

Oh I agree, but back then, before I had access to such fancy things, I did it the hard way.

I don't play with retro tech any more, though I greatly enjoy looking at it, so it's a moot point for me.

The only thing I really want, is a Compaq Portable III, but the cost to get them functional again really isn't worth it to me.

I love to work on retro machines before XP.  It gives me a challenge to try to mount the coolers.  Also PGA 370 socket coolers are meant to be thumb breakers or jabbing your screw driver into your motherboard.  My thumb still hurts since Saturday night trying to use mounting pressure on that cooler.

I well recall the fear of seeing how those coolers were supposed to be installed the first time.

I was glad I never wrecked a mobo doing those but doubly glad when an alt mounting system came out.

I don't know if this is considered "retro", but here is my EVGA Classified SR-2. It has two LGA 1366 sockets from 2010, which allows support for up to two X5690 six core Xeons, and this board is special because both of the CPUs are overclockable.

These boards are considered collectors' items now, which is why I haven't sold mine. They are worth the same amount that I paid for the board six years ago.

I haven't had that issue with my rounded ATA cables.  I guess it depends who makes it.  We got ours from a IT company that sold off it's entire Rounded Ultra ATA cables by the pallet and we got tons of them and none of them had issues.  But of course we don't use IDE HDD's anymore.  We use CF to IDE adapters or SATA/SSD to IDE adapters.

It's funny how some tech depreciates into nothing (zip drives, for example, relative to what they cost to begin with) and others hold their value for reasons that escape me.

I managed to sell some 750MB USB Zip drives (plus power brick, USB cable, and 1 each of 250MB and 750MB disks) for $50 each.

Had two bundles. Sold within a week.

I've been trying to find a 750MB ATAPI drive, but they're really hard to find. I have a USB one, but I kinda need the USB port it takes up.

Oh yeah, and my "250MB" ATAPI drive thinks it's 100MB.

Spits out 250MB ones, but reads 100MB ones fine.
