I have a picture of most of my spare drives in a post back on page 228. The old Caviar should be in there, pretty much all my IDE drives anyway. My SATA drives are another story yet lol

With IDE/SD to PATA and SATA/PATA bridge cards being so cheap and SSD's being dirt cheap too I really don't have any need for hard drives under 256 GB anymore. I keep a couple around just to have but really...I don't need them. SATA is when I started experimenting with RAID on my Pentium 4 setup. SATA 150 was barely any faster than ATA 133 was but I had a decent RAID controller on the Asus board, sadly it was on some kind of PCI bus so it was still ham strung by that but if I bumped the PCI frequency I found that I could get a fair bit more speed out of the RAID 0 array and corrupt all my data even faster on all my hard drives! Sometimes I still find a file from back then that's all garbled up. Scrambled up a bunch of my MP3 collection really good....

Hey - at least you didn't forget to make sure that all your files were there when you used an ext4 extractor, and proceeded to do a full format on the drive.

Not sure if this counts. This is as retro as I can get. This is an LGA775 board with Intel Core 2 duo E4500 from my very first build. Guess I'm just not that old yet 😂

Its an S3 Virge, with a heatsink added (they didn't need one). It is missing the mpeg upgrade card however.

I bought a Thinkpad G40 from someone who doesnt really know what they have. They showed it booting into XP and saying it made a lot of noise and thats all that matters on that regard. Sniped it and got the rest of the stuff i needed, new keyboard entirely because it was missing keys in the picture, 32gb IDE SSD to replace the aging 4200rpm hard drive, a new battery, a 3ghz Pentium 4 engineering sample and 1gb of ram.

If you've never seen these machines before, these are laptops with desktop socket 478 in them, which take full on pentium 4's. Not mobile, not downclocked, 68-89 watt pentium 4's. It does this with a massive two fan heatsink, and actually stays fairly quiet.

Gonna get it up and running with either a fresh install of XP on the SSD or 32bit lubuntu 12.04, for the linux equivalent of basically windows 7. So i can still browse the web on it without too much hassle. XP can do that as well with new moon but theres way more compatibility issues with trying to do much of anything else.

Then im gonna daily the laptop until i cant take it anymore.

I have an HP Pavilion ZD8000 which has a LGA775 Pentium 4 3.2GHz with 89W TDP. Has quite a big heatsink, but it's actually surpisingly quiet. With Windows XP and the newest version of Mozilla Firefox that runs on it, I have no problems with browsing the Internet. I think I've posted pictures of it earlier in this thread, so I'm not posting again (will repost them, if someone wants and can't find the old post). The problem of mine is that it needs a new screen, haven't bothered to find one and sadly the one I have does not work in this laptop (the laptop has a 1440x900 screen, I have a spare 1680x1050 screen, that turns out is not compatible, tested it).

Nope :/
2nd gen and newer Intel does not count yet, but that laptop looks familiar (just yours has more space and a 3rd gen chip instead of 2nd gen compared to mine)

So I managed to use all 8 slots on my IBM 286!  Who wants to try their hand at identifying every card?

Jesus do you even have any IRQ's left to assign?!? I recall running out once in Windows 98 on an old Gateway motherboard, had a PCI slot left but some onboard devices were conflicting, learned about disabling things you don't need like the parallel and serial ports to free up resources for other things like a better sound card with game port or an extra IDE card. Not that any of that is a problem anymore.

I didn't take a full IRQ inventory but I managed to get every single thing working.

My best guess is cards for: a modem, memory module, sound card, EGA video card, parallel/serial card, network adapter (token ring), additional HDD adapter, and possibly a processor upgrade adapter for a 386SX (I actually had one of those in my 286).

from left to right..   HardMPU 401 adapter, IBM EGA video card, soundblaster 2.0, AST Rampage 286 plus ram expansion board, 3com 3c509 ethernet, Adaptec SCSI adapter, and a MFM controller that I'm using to drive the floppy drives.  it all fits!
