Should I overclock my 2400MHz HyperX to 3866MHz? (Mobo does support RAM OC)

Hi guys, I jsut bought my brand new MSI Z370-A Pro with 4 sticks of 2400MHz 4GB Kingston HyperX, means a total of 16GB DDR4, occupying all 4 ram slots. My CPU is an Intel Core i3-8100 (stock speed). I'm wondering if it's safe to overclock my ram to 3866Mhz.Simply because my motherboard does support to overclock the ram way up over 4000MHz. Does the CPU affect the ram overclock? And will overclocking it to 3866MHz or just overclock my ram in general hurts my PC? Thanks!

Dont push more than 1.4V of power and it wont damage anything. That said, RAM sticks rated for 2400MHz wont let you oc all that much. Gotta be gracious if it even reaches 3000MHz without using stupidly loose timings.

think about it, 2400 kit sells low, but the higher speed kits sell for a lot more. you'd be best pressed a 2666 OC with respectable timings.

what is presented to you is that the mobo is capable of handling a 4000MHz OC of 4000MHz modules (if the IMC is capable).

In terms of CPU overclocking, yes. In terms of RAM overclocking, not at all. Not with Ryzen that shares memory controllers that is.

You'll almost certainly not achieve 3866MHz on that RAM. If it could that stable, it would have been sold as a faster kit. 

 

You'll likely struggle to get 3000MHz. RAM typically doesn't overlook much as its basically sold at the highest stable settings anyway. Overclocking it tends to require a voltage bump and loosening the timings

I’m at like 2933 1.35V CAS 17. 2400MHz RAM is rated low for a reason
