upgrade to 1080ti or 8700k?

Currently my system is a 4790k 16gb of ram and a 1080. Im going to either buy the 1080ti or the 8700k but im not sure which would be a better upgrade.

Wait for next gen, neither upgrade is worth it right now IMO

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

You know you could say that every time a new generation comes and still be waiting 10 years down the line.

Your 1080 is fine. It will run all modern games at a good high or ultra settings. Your CPU does need the upgrade though so an 8700k would definitely help.

CPU: Intel Core i7 8700

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070

MOBO: ASUS Z370-F STRIX

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2133MHz

I agree with Damascus. I would wait for next gen Nvidia Volta cards. But if you truly insist on upgrading now, its pretty much up to you. The 1080ti offers 20% better performance than the 1080, but it's pretty expensive. The i7 8700k is also pretty spendy (at apparantly $500?! Wtf!)

The 8700k will offer better performance in programs that heavily utilize the cpu.

The 1080ti will for sure net you more fps in games, but unless you're playing at 4k with a 144+ hz monitor, it almost wont matter.

Personally I'd wait for Volta and for prices to drop a bit for the 8700k. Maybe grab it on a sale if it goes sub $300

If you decide to upgrade now, be prepared to be disappointed when Volta gets released shortly after.

I wouldn't say wait for next gen if Pascal wasn't getting old, but it is so is wait.

Wow a new generation is almost out, it's too old and won't run anything anymore!

Your advice is going to make someone potentially waste money and time. Their GPU is fine, however their CPU is over 4 years old and the system could do with the extract 2 cores 4 threads

I agree with this. Your CPU is 4 generations old and could use the upgrade before you do anything with your gpu

I own a 980 ti, I'm quite aware of the difference between generations.  OP can upgrade the gpu now for ~30% extra performance or spend the same for double performance in 3-7 months.

In terms of cpu it's absolutely not worthwhile unless OP is massively into cpu bound tasks

I own a 960 and didn't automatically jump to the next generation as soon as it got released. The 1080 is still an amazing card and will be for years.

Yes, my point isnt that last gen becomes worthless.

What I'm saying is don't spend 1k (inflatikn :() on a 1080 ti, spend 600 on a 2080 for massive performance gains.

Just remembered, if you decide to upgrade to an 8th gen intel cpu, you'll have to also upgrade your motherboard to a Z370 motherboard, as the Z270 and other chipsets are incompatible with 8th gen Coffee Lake processors

I also never said to buy the 1080Ti. I said to buy no GPU at all. A newer CPU would help even in games and other tasks due to the better architecture and overall performance

The upgrade isn't worth it with the insane RAM prices

Or if you really dont care about your wallet catching fire, you could get 2 1080ti's and run them in SLI. Or better (worse) yet, 2 Titan Xp's in SLI

now is a great time to sell your 1080 if you can find a 1080 ti for 800.
