does this utilize cpu or gpu power?

i could put my dual xeon server to work on this, if it uses cpu..

You can use both, or either. You can also choose how many cores/threads to use. I don't know anything about running it with dual cpu though. Perhaps someone else here has experience with that.

what are the optimal settings in the program? currently both the cpu threads and gpu index are at -1. is this good?

i have a dual xeon L5630 machine with an rx460 gpu.

also, i've noticed that on full setting, the cpu goes to 100%, but the gpu is ideling in task manager. it does get high temps. am i doing something wrong?

EDIT: my machine went to 100% complete on a task, but i didn't recieve any points...?

I have a 4790k and have my cpu set to use 6 threads so it's not completely at 100% when set to full. I leave my gpu at -1. Every once in a while it takes a while for my gpu to start folding, not sure why. As for points they update at certain times, so they don't show up instantly on your account.

What are all the your settings in F@H?

Like how many cores does F@H show for the CPU?

And is the GPU being shown in F@H?

GPUs will not fold if you are using the machine and F@H is not set to Full.

If set to Full, the GPU will fold while you use the machine.

I am not fully knowledgeable on dual CPU setups since the death of Bigadv cause those to go out of favor for folding (back in the day those out did GPUs for points).

Oh man i just found this section, I spend about 99% of my time on LTT in the news. After WAN, i wanted to go see what sort of mining community was here and i cant express how happy i was to see that Cure and folding was at the top. Whats the Chances they will fork a "Good" coin for Linus coin?

I've always been kind of a lurker when it comes to LTT stuff. I got into folding in the winter months after hearing about it on LTT last year, actually. This year I've got a GTX 1060 6163 in my rig so I figured what the heck, might as well put my points in the bucket.

Hi, I've new to Folding and have been Folding (for LTT) for the last 3-4 days.  Im only getting around 250k PPD with a GTX 970 (OC) and a Xeon X5675(using 8 Cores).  Can anyone suggest how to improve my PPD.  Thanks.

It looks like you're getting substantially less on your GPU than you should.Do you ever pause it? Are your drivers up to date?

Just found there was a driver update available from Nvidia however I get the same PPD after the update.

Working properly now, 3770k 3.7ghz never goes above 70C, which doesn't sound much till you realise I only have one fan in my entire system (exhaust fan) so the system is essentially silent.

However for some reason only doing 150k PPD, the gtx 1060 6gb should do 400k alone?

Thanks for joining and helping with the team.

Looking at your donor stats at Extreme Overclocking it appears you are mostly just getting CPU Work Units (WUs) and the GPU work units are failing. You appear to have a passkey so after 10 successful WUs your points should increase dramatically. Your Stanford stats show 60 WUs but that may included failed work units.

My first suspicion is that the system is overheating. I’m assuming your 3770K is air cooled so that’s 77W of heat with 120W of heat from the 1060 and only a single exhaust fan.

Check your CPU and GPU temperatures using HWinfo, MSI Afterburneror EVGA Extreme OC etc. Ideally your CPU and GPU should stay under 90C.

The GTX 1060 6GB should get 380-440,000 Points per day (PPD) where you would only likely get 30,000 to 50,00PPD from the CPU.

Try Folding with just the GPU (pause the CPU) and monitor the temperatures. If it’s running hot try removing the side panel. If that helps then the card is likely starving for cool air.  Try adding a front intake fan if you can.

Check the motherboard slot the GPU is plugged into to make sure it is providing at least 2 PCIe3 or 4 PCIe2 Lanes directly from the CPU and not from the PCH.

Please attach a more current log and a screenshot from the F@H advanced control showing the progress for the GPU (click on the GPU in the upper area to select it and show the details in the lower part)

Considering my options now. I want to do a SFF pc build for my daily and lob this rig full of fans and gpu's was the idea, then put it in a corner of the less used room in the house, mine NERVA coin which is CPU only whilst folding on multiple GPU's. But it appears this MB is el cheapo so won't support multiple gpu's without slowing them down. Got to love ASUS in 2012 - make a V2 version of a board claiming improvements but cull the VRM's and the PCI-E ports to save them money aka more profit...

So if I wanted to do that I would have to upgrade the board...trying to find a used Z77 fully loaded board that actually works in a tiny country in Europe... they are all selling for £300 which is ridiculous.

That's crazy. You could almost get a new SLI capable Z370 board, G5400 and a 4GB DDR4 2400 stick for the same price

Has anyone got suggestions why my GTX 970 (OC & Watercooled) is only getting an average of 125,000 PPD?  Its running 24/7, NVIDIA drivers are up to date and temps are 36-38°C under full load.

You should be getting between 250 and 500kPPD with that card.

The NVidia inspector report posted above looks like it shows that the card is only in a PCIe3 slot with 2 lanes. That may be impacting performance if it is the case but should still keep the card fairly well fed.

I Notice your also CPU folding on your Xeon.  Have you left two threads free, one for the GPU and one for the OS?  So if you have a 8T/4C CPU you should be configuring the CPU slot to only use 6 threads.  The Folding software _should_ do that by default but you could try that or just pause the CPU folding (right-click on the CPU slot to pause just the CPU) and see if the GPU’s PPD increases.

Hi, thanks for your suggestions Gorgon.

I actually fixed this earlier today, I made a custom BIOS (from the downloaded official Asus Strix BIOS off the website) and now I'm now folding at 338k PPD currently on this project.

I'm planning on pushing the card further now I got it working correctly.  To answer your question about Xeon cores, yes, I'm only using 3 cores to fold on 24/7 with 2 more on idle.  So there should be more than enough CPU resources to support the GPU.

Thanks again.

i would also make sure that the gpu folding is given maximum priority in task manager and set affinity to just the cores that aren't being used by the cpu folding, you shouldn't need to separate them from the OS unless they have pretty high utilization already. from what i can tell the folding program doesn't really utilize threads as much it does cores so i would test out using 2 or four threads as opposed to three, see if there is a difference.

i have a very similar set up to yours, i have a r5 1600, 6 core 12 thread with 1 rx 580. my cpu folding is set to an affinity of CPUs 2-15, cause windows prefers cores 0&1.

then the gpu folding task is locked to cores 0&1 whilst given maximum priority. this results in my gpu score being around 360k-390k points per day with my cpu giving another 20-40k.

keep in mind that not all work units are orth the same amount of points so you can also just get an unlucky string of low point proteins. but that shouldnt bring your gpu score down below 300k at the worst of times

Alrighty, internet finally rehooked back at the house (drop the other ISP since they where taking forever to re-fix their lines after the hurricane last year).

Should have one or two of my rigs back to crunching this weekend or so.  O boy I'm way behind on my point output :P .  Hopefully enough cool weather sticks around for a bit longer (darn inside temps already slowly getting back to high 70Fs).

At this point I’d trade locations.  We just went from a few weeks in the -20C temps to warmer weather with freezing rain.  We get about 2 months of “summer” here.

At least the folding rigs are keeping the basement toasty.  Even thought of running power out to the shed to see what the real ambient would do for Boost 3 ?

You probably would not want to be here in the mid Springs and into the Summers though (temps tend to crank up past 98F (36.6C) a good bit of the time with some days going past 100F (37.7C)).  Plus, high humidity here makes even mild temps feel a bit warmer or in some cases muggie (or, as I heard from folks use to dry climates when they visit here, feels like they are being wacked in the face by all the moisture in the air).

A Winter here sometimes have temps maybe get below 40F (4.4C), most of the times day temps are around 60-65F(15.5-18.3C) in "Winter" months.  Some rare cold snaps drop temps to around 35F (1.6C) or lower but those don't last long around here.

Aka, our so called "Winter" time.  :P
