Good news, it looks like my RAM, graphics card, wireless card, sound card, and SSD survived whatever happened, so at least there's that.

I was actually looking at that 850 P2 PSU first but it wasn't available anywhere in my area so I picked up the 850 G3 just so that I could get back up and running today instead of ordering the P2 online and hoping it doesn't get delayed with the Christmas shipping congestion. Thank you for the tip though.

It's kinda funny even with the same cooler, case, and fans this new 8700K sure does run cooler than my old 6700K and it clocks much higher at much lower voltages. I even lapped my 6700K to help with the temps and it was still worse, I must have really had a dud.

silicon lottery on the 6700k, i had 2 2600ks, one was 4.5ghz @1.3v, the other barely cracks 4.0

The base oc for 8700k seems to be 1.2v for 4.4ghz and 1.35v for 4.8, worst case i think then if u wanna test your chip u can go higher from those values). The 8700k runs hotter than 100%, it idles on less (for me anyway)

I haven't had much time to play with overclocking the 8700K yet, but I'm surprised by how well it clocks at low voltages, for the last hour or so I've been running all cores at 4.5GHz @ 1.17V

if it really does run 4.5 under 1.2v i think u got a golden chip (top 10%), grats.

Thanks for pointing out the bright side, this is not what I wanted or expected to have happen to a 13 month old system, and shelling out $1000 on new parts and the Microcenter "no questions asked warranty" wasn't fun. I normally don't buy those warranties, but after this...

It would be nice to win the lottery again, I miss the old days of massive overclocks on socket 775. I did notice that CPUz and AIDA64 both report the wrong core voltage, CPUz says I've been running 4.5GHz stable at 0.584V lol, and AIDA64 shows 1.36V, I set the voltage to 1.15V in the BIOS and it's reporting as 1.168V in the Asus AI Suite, I'm thinking this is probably accurate.

Did you have a problem redeeming one? If you ever have a problem with one of our warranties, hit me up. I'd be happy to try to help. They're highly rated for a reason.

Edit: Ah, I read wrong. Gotcha.

I've had nothing but great experiences at Microcenter, they even know my non-techie wife by name, Lou at the St. Davids location is awesome, he always keeps her entertained while I browse for hours.

I just meant that paying for the warranty wasn't a fun addition to this unexpected bill, but having "no questions asked" and getting new parts would have been nice. I always thought "how often does a CPU fail?", well after this experience I bought the warranty, the 3 year plan on the motherboard and CPU cost me $150 in total, but I was out $850 today because I didn't have it.

Out of curiosity, do you know how Microcenter feels about CPU delidding when it comes to their warranties?

Well I really could use a new PC for editing video and creating music but with everything on this PC it makes it hard for me to imagine migrating a lot of the stuff I already have. The thought of it is maddening to be honest.

So I heard back from Gigabyte for my motherboard RMA, it's approved (only 13 months into a 3 year warranty), but I didn't get a prepaid shipping label so I sent them an email requesting one, we'll see how that goes. They asked me to fill out a system configuration form for my return and this thing is a joke, my CPU socket isn't listed, the form predates DDR4 RAM as only basic DDR3 speeds are listed, and Windows 7 is the newest operation system they list, who is still using XP on hardware new enough to be under warranty?

This form really makes them look unprofessional in my opinion, because how can the socket of the motherboard I'm sending in not be listed, not all i7 CPUs are socket 1366 lol. What do you guys think?

i think they expect you to pay for the shipping (that's how companies turns you away from warranties), if they send you a new board it's worth it, if they give u a "repaired" board it's a waste of time. Basically an experiment to see what you get in return after paying for shipping.

Yep that's how they turn you away from filing warranty claims and turn you away from buying their products in the future, every company will have warranty claims, it's how they handle them that matters to me. I know a lot of manufacturers expect the customer to pay for return shipping but in my opinion that's BS, many companies don't have stupid policies like this. I understand that many PC hardware "issues" are installation errors or failures to read the manual and I wouldn't want to pay for the shipping on it that situation if I were them, but I made it pretty clear that my issue doesn't fall into those categories so we'll see what they say, sometimes companies will surprise you, you never know if you don't ask.

I'm with you on not wanting a repaired board back if it's the same serial number, I'd be fine with a real refurb board that wasn't rushed through or a new board, but my only goal here is to get a board that I can sell to recoup some of my costs.

If you are looking to sell the RMA then you'd probably be fine.

i know asus and gigabyte does it, not sure about msi (i'd assume so), i know evga is good for video card and psu and Gskill is good for ram, other than that i'm really on the fence about buying extended warranty for motherboards.

So I just got a "delivery incomplete" message from gmail regarding the email I sent to Gigabyte; I sent the email to services@gigabyte-usa.com which was the contact email listed in the RMA email I received and apparently that email address is incorrect, when checking their website I found that the correct email address is services@gigabyteusa.com. This is really pathetic, no prepaid shipping label, an outdated form that doesn't list options for the motherboard I'm sending in, and the wrong contact information, these guys are a joke.

Um... Am I a bit late because on your rig description it says you have a 8700k and a hero maximus mobo so I assume you have a new rig and decided to Beth the 8th gen cup from intel right?

Used to be everywhere in LTT forums, had a break which lasted apparently 1 year LOL.

Gonna get up againnnn.

Wake me up if I sleep again like Oppy.

Yeah now I looked on your second page and realised your situation is basically finished. Why is this thread still up? You should get a new one on overclocking your 8700k instead of using this one, you'll get more replies.

I actually do have a second thread that's just about overclocking my 8700K because I agree that it's best to keep this one on topic and just related to the failure of the old parts. At this point I'm just using this one to discuss how the RMA process is going because it's not what I think a lot of people would expect it to be.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well after 12 days Gigabyte finally responded saying that they will not cover the shipping costs to send in my "ultra durable" motherboard for warranty repairs, I guess their warranty department is really backed up, why else would it take 12 days for them to respond. I'm glad I didn't buy another Gigabyte motherboard, but I regret having one in my other computer, and having bought this one in the first place, their customer service is appalling.

Ford will pay to tow my truck to the nearest dealer if it breaks down in the first 5 years, Smith and Wesson sends out prepaid shipping labels whenever you need to send something in, and both these companies seem to still be in business. I guess they figured out that adding insult to injury by making a customer pay to send in a defective product isn't good for creating repeat customers.

I have only good experience with the RMA process of Gigabyte in Germany, whenever i had something to RMA they sent me to the vendor where i bought it, emailing me a letter to print so that i could simply exchange/or could get money back. Thats the way i got a new GTX970 G1, the first one that ive bought had terrible coilwhine. (this was in 2015)
