i saw someone on r/apple just ordered their imac pro. and even upgraded the specs..

if they have the deep pocket to afford a 5k machine, you bet they have the ability to earn those money back.. content creators and coders earns a lot. 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

Oh, they will.  If it takes you two hours to export the final version of an 8K video project versus, say, six hours, that could be the difference between completing a project on time and having to pay a penalty (or worse, losing future business).  $5,000 or even $10,000 is nothing if it rescues a $100,000 contract.

Have to say not one for saying this normally but well done Apple. Managed to build something which is way over the top but the price isn't actually that bad. I was expecting it to be a lot more.

MacOS is basically at its core a fork of BSD with a heck of a lot of optimisations added in along the way.

They could but only once AMD support thunderbolt3 (something that would be possible as of jan once Intel give up control over it)

Apples Metal2 API can be used by anyone (who has a llvm compiler writing code in swift/C/C++/objectC, there are even some basic wrappings for python/Fortran through llvm cross compiling such as cython)  hell apple really want developers to use it. Its the absolute opposite of a private API apple had many sessions at WWDC last year with the people who wrote it on stage talking about it, and they even had workshops were developers could meet them and get 1-to-1 help with porting their projects to metal2. Adobe for sure had people at WWDC so it's on Adobe for not using metal. Iwht respect to Qucisync from what I understand about the iMac pro is they are using the VegaGpu for this as it is much faster.

No, it's not. OSX is Apple's Darwin with closed sources components. Darwin was derived from from NextStep, which existed before FreeBSD. And OSX is fairly complex and Linux like if the user gets past all of Apple's fluff and basic lockouts.
