Ads and settings in will Grant you but you have no idea what Windows 7 is or is not gathering and sending to Microsoft.

To say "Windows 7 doesn't spy like Windows 10" is not possible unless you have full access to the source code of both and can check.

One could easily argue the Linux is better than 10 and 7 because it verifiably does not spy.

However this is pointless, if an operating system meets your needs than it's the right out for you.

I just don't get why Microsoft is so interested in user's data.

I personally love Windows 10 and, I don't really care about the whole spying.

Honestly, if Microsoft is interested in what kind of games I play or what kind of porn I watch then, they can just give me a call and I'll tell them.

There are loads of reasons why they want your personal information. Just look at Google (Alphabet). They are currently worth around 600 billion dollars, while Microsoft is worth a bit over 400 billion. Facebook is worth about as much as Microsoft these days, and Facebook is purely data mining.

Behavior prediction is huge. It can be used for determining which ads to show you, when to show them to you but also things like trend analysis, predicting when customers are looking for competitors, and many more things.

On top of that, Microsoft has a strong relation with several government agencies, and predicting crimes is a big thing right now. In fact, at least a few cities' police forces now uses machine learning for things. In Vancouver it is used for predicting property crimes, and in Durham it is used to determine how long suspects should be held in custody. In the UK the police have started using it to "predict where and when crime will happen, and deploy officers to prevent it".

This actually reminds me of a great BBC documentary about "superbrands". In the technology episode the host realizes that in order to become a dominant player, you need to be the "gatekeeper". The gatekeepers are the ones who control what the consumers can and can't access. If you can predict behavior with great accuracy then it is very easy to not only become the gatekeeper but also remain the gatekeeper. That's why Microsoft are currently pushing the store so much. Their goal is to become the gatekeeper of all software on Windows, just like how Apple is the gatekeeper for iOS (and moving towards becoming it on MacOS too).

You can watch the documentary on Youtube here. It's really good.

Or you know... You could look at what traffic actually leaves your computer. Verifying if your computer is or isn't sending a bunch of traffic to Microsoft is really not that hard.

Download Wireshark. Set it to log everything leaving your network card. Wait a day or so. Use the filters to remove legitimate traffic (even Windows 7 does things like NTP for clock syncing) and check for suspicious traffic.

Not sure I can agree with you there. Just because something does what you need it to do doesn't mean it is the best option. If you're hungry then a bag of potato chips will probably fill you up, but it's probably not the best, or even a decent, option.

Direct X 12. Windows 10 is also a lot more lean and fast compared to Windows 7.

It runs modern UWP apps alongside traditional Win32 apps.

It has virtual desktops and so many more features.

The only people clinging onto Windows 7 who are not businesses genuinely do hate Windows 10 or are too nostalgic.

Windows 10 leaner than Windows 7? Not since the pre-release version - Windows 7 is a leaner OS than Windows 10 AU, CU, FCU, both in resource-usage, and in pre-installed programs. Windows 10 is filled with unnecessary bloatware, and is the most bloated Windows OS to-date.

Windows 10 faster than Windows 7? Only in starting up. From there, lots of things take longer in Windows 10 than Windows 7. In fact, that's one of the things that I love about booting back into Windows 7 after using Windows 10 for a while: So many things just respond faster, "snappier," and it's like a breath of fresh air.

UWP apps are garbage, and there is no good reason why a person would want to use them. They're slower than Win32, and they consume more resources than Win32. You talk about Windows 10 being leaner, and faster than Windows 7 (it's not), and then present UWP as a benefit of Windows 10? That's contradictory. Anything a person wants or needs will be in Win32, and it will be interesting to see how long it is before UWP goes away completely due to being obsolete. UWP was just another of Microsoft's underhanded efforts to force business away from competitors and into Microsoft's hands, by coercing people to be locked into the Microsoft Store environment. But because developers, businesses, and Windows owners really don't like UWP (which is for good reason), UWP has had the opposite effect, and encouraged people all the more to stay away from Microsoft Store (as if what Microsoft pulled with GFWL, and all their other anti-consumer actions and non-reliability weren't already enough encouragement).

Once it becomes illegal for Microsoft to harvest and sell people's data (which I think is inevitable, and it only takes happening in one country before others follow), things will get interesting, as Microsoft won't give 2 craps about Windows 10 anymore. It's a terrible maligning of Windows 7, where dependability, stability, control, and user security are concerned.

Windows 7 supports DX11, and also has Vulkan support, which accomplishes the same thing as DirectX 12. DirectX 12 is proprietary to Microsoft, whereas Vulkan is open-sourced, and managed by Khronos Group. They're parallel technology, and so it just matters which one a developer chooses to implement into their products. Right now, non-Microsoft game developers appear to prefer Vulkan, likely for its cross-platform capabilities: Vulkan works on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8(.1), 10, Linux, Android... whereas DirectX12 works only in Windows 10 (and on newer Microsoft consoles).

I think you mean DX 12 :P But on that topic, wasn't 10 exclusive to Vista?  I seem to recall a big outrage about that at the time but eventually everyone just moved to 7 and forgot about it.

Seriously, as someone who refused to switch from XP for many years, I have to say that the new ones are much much better.

Honestly, i have a netbook with windows XP and i use it like once a month because it runs an old program i sometimes like to mess with.

And there's just something about it i really like. It's, simple, or something, it's difficult to explain but it's still such an amazing OS to use.

Everything. Just. Works. Without any bloatware! It's fantastic and so underrated. Also you can mod the sh*t out of it and it doesn't give a damn, it just keeps working.

Simple fix has worked for me on 2 Windows 7 Pro 64 bit machines today:

  1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter: At Start menu, type troubleshoot then click view all at top left of Troubleshooting window, click Windows Updates at bottom of options.
  2. Afterwards, if you try to check for updates immediately, it'll say the service isn't started, so best to just restart Windows.  Simply reboot the computer.
  3. After reboot, go to Windows Update, tell it to look for new updates (there'll be a button but without the red shield).  Then install whatever update(s) found.

I've got several more to check here, but it's working 100% so far.

I think the last "Facebook like" site I used was Myspace waay long ago.

Honestly, that sounds scary.

Does this mean that in the future you could be thrown in jail just because an AI said that you potentially could commit a crime?

Are the apps and programs even moderated on the store?

Because the Google app store on Android is just filled with trash and viruses so, I assume the Windows store is like that as well.

I don't think (or rather, I hope) it won't ever come to that, but like I said it is already used to determine how long to hold people in custody. It could also be used for things like determining which ones are risks and need extra attention. Did you search for how to make bombs? Then be prepared to be stopped at the airport. Stuff like that.

Could also be used by banks to determine if you should get a loan or not, and insurance companies to determine how much you should pay for insurance.

Stuff like that. It's hard to predict what it will be used for in the future.

Doesn't seem like it. The Microsoft store is full of trash as well. But their goal right now seems to grow the platform rather than control it.

I'd assume someone who tries to do anything illegal uses a VPN or at least different search engine than Google.

Well, that's sad. I'd rather use a small but well-moderated store than a huge one filled with trash and Spyware.

That might be OEM bloatware. I clean install 10 on every machine I work on, and the most expensive software that is advertised is Minecraft Win10 edition, at $27. The rest is either free or <$10.

I don’t see how it’s OEM bloatware when the school put a custom image on a spare computer they had for my group. None of the computers are off the self. Every one has a custom image based on what lab they are in.

You don't get the same ads all the time. Sometimes it might be Minecraft, sometimes it might be something else.

But regardless of how much the things advertised costs it should not be OK to fill your 150 dollar (200 MSRP at launch) OS with ads in every single corner. All of the things I listed earlier should be inexcusable by themselves, and the (incomplete) list has 12 things on it. 12+ different places where you need to turn off ads in what's suppose to be a premium, "pro" product, where the previous iterations had zero.

How anyone can defend this bullshit is beyond me.

You should try Vista or 8.1 then.  Those 2 will make you realize that Win7 is much too bloated as well.

When the OS isn't popular enough the MS dev team won't work on it post-launch, meaning they can't ruin it by adding bloat and useless features.
