i3-8350k and 1070 ti Combo bottleneck?

So I've been cutting down my budget a bit and I was looking at an i3-8350k to pair with a 1070 ti. I know that seems like a really odd combination, but I have some very GPU intensive games like Star Citizen I want to play, but I also want to OC up to as close as I can get to 5 GHz on the CPU. Will the i3 bottleneck the 1070 ti? I didn't think it would because it is actually very similar performance wise to the i7-7700k. I just wanted to make sure.

Is the i3 really worth it over the i5 8400? I can't recall performance numbers off the top of my head, but they're basically the same price.

With a budget like that you should be able to get an 8600k/1080...

Rather than the 8350K, you should get the 8400 and 16GB of faster RAM.

okay thats true but im going for an asus rog build soooooooo $$$

and I could get an 8600k but even though im paying for it entirely I have to make my dad happy about the budget too so dropping the price to the lower end of my budget would make him less freaked out.

I wouldn't sweat it . It's true, the 8400 is slightly better performance in gaming for not much more, but don't let that detract from the performance of the 8350k. You can overclock it up to 5.0ghz with the better chips and a good cooling solution, and at those speeds it will outperform a stock 7700 in most modern games. However, if you can afford it, I would spring for a 8600k.

Same cost, more cores. The faster memory will let those cores do whatever the overclocked 8350K will while the multi-core will run away.

Do you have a build going yet? You can try asking for a build with a CFL i5-K that'd be in your budget.

Where have you seen that it's 99% of it's performance? Everything I've seen has put it right in between.

Well it also makes my dad more okay with it for some odd reason so its not entirely my choice

Exactly. So OC the 1080, more performance.

Unless you're saving a significant amount of money or have a lower resolution/refresh rate monitor, I'd still go 1080.

If you want to lower the cost I'd go with an i5 8400 with a cheap cooler like a Cryorig H7 or a Hyper 212 Evo with a 1070ti. Don't buy a quad core for a high end gaming PC in 2017. It won't have the legs to last the 3-5 years of solid gaming that most people want.

I'm going to bed right now. Post your PCPP link and oet other members take a look at it. They might be able to get you a 1070 Ti and 8600K build for your budget.

 

If not, I'll be back in the morning to spec one out.
