i3-8350k and 1070 ti Combo bottleneck?

That was my original intent, and I had a 2200$ budget to do it, but my dad had a problem with it. But honestly I dont need that much power.

Stock cooler is good for the 8400. It's an added and unnecessary expense for aftermarket.

If you're using a monitor like that you don't need a Ti, you could easily get away with a regular 1070 and honestly an i3 8100.

Sorry haven't seen any reviews using the stock cooler. Can it keep it's turbos up at 4.0ghz under heavy gaming load like BF1? If it can then hell yeah save the $30 and throw in another $50 to get a 1080.

I mean maybe for like right now. In 3 years the extra power of the 1080 or the 1070 ti could get him an extra 6-12 months out of the card. Also an i3 8100 would not last 3-5 years at 75fps in AAA games. It can barely do it now in some games.

Star Citizen? We don't know the game's not out. There are people who bought 780ti's for Star Citizen in 2014 because the 780ti ran it like a beast. Now that card sucks for Star Citizen.

Ehhhh I think at that point he might as well buy a new card. Plus I highly doubt it'll extend the card another year. It's not that much of a performance bump over a good 1070. If he's getting a 60hz monitor why does 75fps matter? Plus, you can go from Ultra (what most benchmarks are run in) down to high to prolong the life. Again, lower cost now, and upgrade in a couple years when it's actually needed.

I mean the game's still being developed. Even in betas that happen a month before launch, performance can vary wildly across different similarly speced machines. Framerates can improve or drop dramatically  from the beta to launch. We're still like a year or more from the launch of Star Citizen. The only firm answer to whether or not a 1070 will run star citizen at launch is "IDK Maybe?"

Star Citizen is supposed to be one of the most demanding games. So, who knows.

25% can definitely get an extra 6-12 months out of a card. All I'm saying is that there are games TODAY that sit around 75 fps with a 1070. By holiday 2018 he;s dropping settings down to high if I had to guess. A 1080 could probably keep doing ultra for another 6-12 months past that.

I don't think it'll be that severe. Games don't usually become that much more difficult to run over a 12 month period.

It makes more sense to buy for what you currently have, and upgrade later. In 3 years the current 1080 will perform closer to a 3050ti/3060 or however they name their next set of cards.

I don't believe that for a second.  Quad-cores are still mainstream, and will be for many years.  Developers aren't going to abandon their main market.

Most cards can get to 1900-2000 MHz which puts it smack dab next to the 1080. Unless your luck is really bad you should get very similar performance (basically margin of clock difference between 1080s) for a good chunk less cash.
