Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I used to have similar troubles, then I switched my wife to a Chromebook and setup DNS filtering on our network and now both of our lives are so much better (she's so happy to not be dealing with Windows anymore and I'm happy that the ads and bad content won't load on any device on our network).

Never considered that, time for me to build 2 external DNS servers and lock all of the devices to those servers. :D

Maybe try something like deep freeze?

http://www.faronics.com/products/deep-freeze/

It basically just sandboxes the PC unless you unlock it, so all you'd have to do is reboot the PC and it's cleaned up again. Maybe get a compact flash drive for it so she can store files on it outside the sandbox if needed.

literally get her a Chromebook. If shes just surfing the web then its all she needs and it is so easy to use and you wont get so many viruses. Chromebooks cant really execute files like windows so its harder for it to get all of the bad stuff

Your wife is not the worst. You're comparing your wife to the likes of ISIS or Adolf Hitler, and they're still not the worst.

Install Qubes OS (Not suggesting its easy to use but at least you can take comfort in that it will be slightly more secure :P)

I considered that but there's no reliable way to force the VPN to connect automatically and stay connected (not to mention some networks will block VPN connections). Moving the DNS servers to external servers is the best solution I can think of.

To all you white knights, there's a reason I posted in off topic, I'm just ranting that my wife fucked her laptop over and the fact that I have to fix it because she has no clue how to do so, despite me teaching her how to maintain it and deal with issues if they arise. Obviously I'm not taking it from her, it'd be much easier just to leave it broken and just not worry about it. It's just a pain in my ass that shouldn't exist.

Basically just a rant thread and nothing more. In every marriage, a little rain must fall. ;)

I second Deep Freeze however. User friendly for the wife, and relatively little work on your part. Otherwise a Chromebook or even a Mac (not immune, but less common to come across malware) are viable options.

Clearly the wife has no interest in computers beyond doing what she needs. The techie's job is to ensure that the computer will function well in the hands of these users. The computer exists to serve the user, and not the other way around. We just need to figure out how to make it so.

These are the struggles a lot of us have to deal with when living with people who don't have any concern for their security or privacy. I've been working on an idea for a while now on how to protect my family, devices, and network without having to rely on other people to change their habits which is really hard to do. So far the best I've come up with is the DNS filtering, VLANs for my important stuff, and locking down devices as best I can. I really should revisit this idea and flesh it out more.

Calm down and take time to literally walk your wife through what's she doing and why she shouldn't do it. Simply giving her commands like a dog isn't going to change anything. She might not be as tech savvy as you are, and that's okay. Most people aren't.

Yeah, some people just haven't got to that point where they learn... or they passed that moment by...  But I've heard of deep freeze, just hadn't thought of it, thanks.
