So, I have a backup plan if the VM idea won't work due to SR-2 wonkiness: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-X8DTG-QF-REV-2-01-Motherboard-W-2x-Intel-X5670-48GB-Reg-RAM/274210607567

Supermicro's 4 GPU board.

Upsides of this over the SR-2: more memory support, native and advertised virtualization support, 2x 2.0x4, 1x 1.0x4 electrical PCIe slots not blocked by GPU. Also, onboard video for VM/host management
Downsides: cost, 11 slots so RIP cases, no overclocking so RIP FPS maybe?, no native sata3 or usb3.

We shall see if I need to go this route. At that cost I'm wondering if it's better to go in on a newer platform, but X58 is life and goddamn the SR-2 is a cool weirdo.

Ooooooo yeah the top end Supermicro boards are pretty badass too. Just.. focused on actual server stuff instead of GiGaHeRtZ like the SR-2 lol, whether that's a terrible thing or not depends on what you want. I'm pretty sure the SR-2 is also a RIP cases board, dat HPTX form factor be hella funky ?

SR-2 does have a still unmatched e-peen though ?

hahaha. yea, that Supermicro board would be pretty sweet. It's as weird as the SR-2 form factor wise though-- 15 x 13.5. Basically a 90 degree rotated SR-2 for all dem slotz.

Really depends on whether the SR-2's weird PCIe routing (due to only one 5520 and old-school SLI multiplexer reqs) breaks virtualization or is work-around-able or is just not an issue 10 years later. That's a hopefully-this-weekend item.

I did find the SM board in its original case. It came in a beast-tier rig back in the day-- dual 1400W PSUs, wired for quad Tesla/fermis for gpu computation, wired Sata backplane with hotswap....pretty neat computer. Couple on ebay with 192 GB of ram, just need better processors. And GPUs. Aaaaand......

I'm still going to do my watercooled SR-2 build regardless of VMs. I've wanted it for too long. It just might not be the ultimate multi-gamer-cpu-thing.

H61, that's Sandy/Ivy Bridge, right? 2700K/3770K?

Might be interesting.

On another note, it's been decided: I'm taking a huge step back to a 3570K until I get my hands on a new X99 board.

You gonna get a CPU to match it, or just the motherboard as a wall decoration?

ehhh thinking about it, could be fun if i find a decent chip for cheap, could be good as a PC for a gift for friends or family.

Oh yeah, I found X299 motherboards cheaper than X99 during my search for a motherboard.

If I could afford a CPU, I honestly would have seriously considered stepping up to that level.

In any case, I've sourced a new X99 board that should be here in just about a week. Hopefully that's the only part I need to replace. If not, my backup Z77 hardware should be here soon-ish.

There's a not insignificant part of me that is thinking X299 + 10980 is a great deal right now for avx-512 enabled workloads. Expensive, sure, but actually pretty attractive if you can use the capability.... If you don't need the 18c it becomes substantially more attractive as well.

Yeah, X299 does have its place, that place has just shrunk a lot since TR, and then again since TR was actually able to compete on performance, not just price.

For people who need AVX-512, a low latency HEDT platform, are hardcore OCers, or are strange people who game on HEDT for some reason (guilty), they still slap. According to guys who run it, well tuned chips can match/beat the 9900K in games, and they'll likely be a bit snappier in many titles than the TRs, while also coming in cheaper than even the lowest TR3000 SKU.

Does output buttloads of heat when OCed, but I think HEDT enthusiasts are used to that at this point, it's mostly newer users or people who don't even use HEDT I've seen complain about it. Power consumption is also large, but that's normal across all HEDT it seems (32c TRs will eat 500-600W with PBO on, I assume the 24c/older 16c ones eat a bit less than that but still a lot).

although last lan-year's-eve party had a BIG spike in energy consumption. Was hilarious seeing the day by day bill-- meh meh meh NYEHOLYSHIT 5x NOMINAL meh meh meh. Still was an added...$5, maybe, despite having 16 hours of 4+ inefficient rigs going flatout plus consoles plus tvs. Whole lotta dgaf about power consumption after that.

It baffles some people lol, guy on discord the other day couldn't understand why I'd run a CPU pulling over twice the power while being slower than a 3950X. Ez answer for me, I have more fun with this one ?

Even with the horrifyingly inefficient rigs I run, I only ever saw a large increase in my power bill during Folding Month. Went from around $130 or so most of the time to IIRC $200. Running a 1660 Ti and 1050 Ti 24/7, and a Radeon VII most of the time when I wasn't gaming. My current rigs I only run when I'm actually using them or doing stress testing, so though they may pull a lot of power (my 780s should pull around 450W at stock ?), it's not for extended periods, and given the low power cost here it takes a damn good while for anything to add up.

The main annoyance is needing more PSUs and bigger cases. Main thing in the way of a possible SR-2 rig for me is needing another quality high-wattage PSU (I got my T2 on sale for $180, but that's a one-off, most of the time a comparable unit is around $400), and needing a massive case.

ha, yea.....my Ax1600i was $450 iirc. It hurts, but on the other hand, now I'll never need a PSU ever again, so...win?

I don't use my rigs all that often so one that burns all the electrons doesn't matter if it's used twice a week for maybe 3hrs tops. Truth be told, I either use my work laptop or my ipad nowadays for most stuff, or my Ryzen rig for AI/programming work. The HEDT stuff is just for grins cuz it's cool and I have disposable income finally.

Would have liked an X99-A or X99-A v2, but I can probably get away with not having to reinstall Windows if I get another Gigabyte board that's similar to my old one.
