Let's talk about Space.

This chat will be related to Space Exploration, Science, Planets, and anything else to do with the Cosmos. Let's talk recent NASA launches, finds, and missions - Such as the Cassini Spacecraft, Hubble Telescope, or Voyagers 1 & 2, etc.

space exploration sadly doesn't get enough funding. We could have been way more ahead but money is rather spent on the military. So shortsighted!

edit: welcome to the Forum

IKR?! Instead of the world putting their differences aside, we could be not only exploring space with a probe, but I think we could've done more manned exploration past our moon and low Earth orbit.

Thank you for welcoming me ?

I am deeply passionate about space exploration and it breaks my heart that I have not been born 150-200 years in the future. Of course I say that now with hindsight, I'd probably be as casual and blase about space in the future as I am now about ipods but still, it's a nice dream to have.

Saturn's northern hemisphere is shaped like a hexagon.

Bee hives are shaped like hexagons.

Does this mean that Saturn is a giant bee hive?

We all need a good laugh sometimes.  xD

We're working on a solar tracker based on 3D printed parts and some old stepper motors.

Interesting, care to give more details?

My brother is the one using it. I designed and 3D printed stuff, as well as designed and built the controller

Is it going to be used for solar panels?

Telescope! Hoping to get it to track precisely with the earth's rotation

I can see uses for that, are you hooking a camera to the telescope?

Yup. We bought a fairly cheap adapter.

Cool, long exposure photos?  Or time lapse videos?

Also, at the risk of sounding like captain obvious, you do have a sun filter, right?

Both, and I'd need to ask @iamdarkbowser

Just in case you all haven't seen these 300,000+ pages of Cassini's pictures of Jupiter - https://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/galleries/raw-images?order=earth_date+desc&per_page=50&page=0

NOTE: Even though no real back story is needed to make these pictures more amazing, The Cassini Spacecraft's batteries were running low and as Cassini began to full into Jupiter's atmosphere, it took several pictures before the crafts batteries fully drained, to which the craft was ripped apart entering Jupiter's atmosphere. ALL INTENTIONALLY TOO! ?

Well, when he wakes up, that'd be one cool thing to see!

While camera sensors are more robust than the human eve (in terms of "looking" at the sun directly) prolonged exposure without adequate protection can still ruin them.

You can also use shade 14 welding glass, if you want to save some money, as long as you don't mind a green sun.

Here is an example of what the sun will look like with shade 14 welding glass.

I do not have a sun filter, I mostly wanted to take pictures of the planets and perhaps some deep sky objects, if I can point at them that is.
