LG G6 - how long will it receive updates?

Totalimus

Hello, so I'm currently in the market looking for a new Android phone.

LG G6 has caught my eye since it's relatively cheap and fits my budget - 375 euros.

I was wondering for how long do these phones usually get OS updates? I've seen a video where a guy said that Android Oreo shall come to LG G6 in February and that LG G5 will not receive it at all even though it is only 1 year old! That's just absurd!

I'm not someone who changes phones every single year and would like to keep this one for about 3 years, therefore, knowing that I'll be rocking the same OS for three years seems unacceptable.

Is this the case for all their phones and maybe for other manufacturers as well? Are Google's phones really the only ones that receive support for multiple years since their release on Android?

There are a few others that support their phones for two years, such as HTC and I believe Samsung. But on time and 100% guaranteed is mainly just Google.

What you can always do though is flash a custom ROM.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

The G6 will without a doubt in my mind receive OS updates for at least 2 more years. More likely 3 years.

I can't say what LG's support would be like but if you went the rom route, you should have community support for as long as a developer supports it (Usually at least 2-3 years or more for popular devices)

keep in mind ROM development for LG phones are not a popular thing to do, the galaxy s4( 2013 phone) has a bigger dev community.

my poor lg lfino got his last update on 18-02-2016 and the phone got released on 19-09-2014 in my country, so a very budget minded phone got this much os update coverage

Indeed, but I still think that even a flagship LG device could be supported for at least two years even if it falls short of the popular S4 with already 4 years of support.

That's quite good, I was just surprised that LG stopped the support for LG G5 (which I assume was a "big" release for them just like Galaxy S "X" is for samsung every year) so quickly.

Hello, I'm going to tell you my experience with LG so you can decide on what you really want, I have not bought either the g6 or the g5, I had a g3 for the past 2,5 years and it broke down recently, what I can tell you about OS support is that LG does not give updates every year or so, when I bought it (1st Frebruary 2015) I received 5.0, 6.0 was annouced but I never saw it comming to the g3 I eventualy got 6.0 after the 2 year warranty, all I know is that half a year later it broke down and I don't know why, (I just came here to talk about the support of the phone) btw don't expect to get updates like on apple.

PS: I might get an S8 or P10 plus.

The G2 had pretty strong support, though it was a fairly standout device for it's time as well.

The G3 got 6.0 but its also down to the carrier if you receive it over the air,I personally had to do it manually using LGs tool on the computer

2 years of support is considered good with Android. If you get the next version of Android, consider yourself lucky.

If you want the most updates, you have to get a Google phone.

Most other manufacturers take a lot longer to push out their updates, if they're even coming.

This should change in the future with the huge redesign of Oreo, but we'll have to wait and see.

Highly, highly unlikely to be 3. I'd even be surprised if it gets whatever comes after Oreo.
