Will my friends psu be enough for GTX 1060 3GB ?

Tadziunia

Hey people, on these days i helped my friend to upgrade his old pc, We upgraded his i3 540 to xeon x3450 for 29eur without any signs of use, also i bought gammaxx s40 for that cpu because on stock cooler it gets quite toasty, but with that deepcool cooler it never goes above 60C even with 3.2ghz overclock. Also i got 60gb ssd only for windows now pc boots in 15s without any waiting on desktop. My friend doesn't want to  upgrade anything else only gpu. But he has Codegen 450w psu from 2010, that cpu never had any king of stress, gpu he used was radeon hd 5670 512mb witch does not require any power cable, and i3 540 wasn't so power hungry.  So What about GTX 1060 3GB ? Will that Codegen 450w psu (which by the way has 6 pin connector) be enough ? or should we go for gtx 1050 ti 4gb ?

Sounds like a crap PSU. I wouldn't risk a worthy graphics card with it at all, no matter it's a 1060 or 1050ti.

Wattage though it's enough for a 1060.

Avoid Codegen like the plague. Wattage is fine, but for gods sake get another brand or risk it blowing up and frying your stuff.

HEADS UP, THIS ACCOUNT IS INACTIVE NOW

I'm keeping everything else the way it was for anyone who might check out my answers in future, but I won't be using LTT.

well yah its fine, untill the PSU burns the house down. its already 7 years old and was never especially good

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Maybe 1050 ti would work just fine ? it doesn't have any power connector at all. By the way we checked how pc handle gtx 1050 2gb. it worked normaly and it also required only pcie slot

The problems with this PSU are the low quality parts and (most likely) lack of safety features like over temp protection, surge protection, over current protection etc. This means that it's very possible that it can't handle even a portion, let's say 70% of it's market wattage without problems like giving too low voltage to the system (so it won't start), or outright set itself on fire. I don't know whether 1060 or 1050ti will run fine on that thing, but I would stop you from doing so because it might destroy your PC while doing it.

don't risk it, a bad power supply can very well burn down your house if it catches fire when it fails.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/26/exploding_computer_vs_reg_reader/

find a CX4/550M, S/M12ii(albeit old), seasonic eco or XFX TS to replace it.

Thank you for advice, but it's not my pc, i would really buy new psu in my friends place, but it's his choice anyway ill show him this recommendations. By the way. 3months ago my another friend took GTX 1050 2GB into his old pc to he has fx 4350, but he also has 400w generic psu which doesn't have any info on it. He play game everyday and so far it's stable even with 400w psu. So that's why i was hoping, if 400w works just fine, why 450w won't work. It will, but will it survive

Not all generic PSU are crap. Some units from Delta are known to last long in small servers running 24/7 for years. Though luck can also be a factor.

If that's what your friend wants to do then do it, just make sure he's warned.

Yeah i agree with you, but it's strange i always were sceptical about codegen. But my pc from 2011 had codegen 400w psu, i sold that pc to my friend, it still works just fine, anotherboarde has codegen 400w from 2010 too, still works just fine even with GTS 250 which requires 450w. Those codegen psu amazes me

I didn't say it cant deliver enough power, but it cant handle an accident (which tends to happen when you least expect it to)

450W is enough, yes, but a Codegen 450W is enough to start a fire so let's grab ourselves a decent PSU.

No, Codegen is normally utter garbage.

They also had an article in the German magazine c't a couple of years (decades) ago because of ther astonishing bad quality...

There are only 2 good usage cases for a Codegen PSU:
a) as paperweight

b) as a weapon, if you need to defend yourself.

Everything else it's NOT.
