The i5 7600k has better performance per core hence improving gaming performance but at a higher temperature and usage.

can the ryzen 5 1600 catch up with driver updates to match the 7600k?

I don't think CPUs have their own drivers but you mean Bios Updates? I would get 1600 for more cores but SCRITLY in terms of gaming, you are able to achieve an outstanding 5-6fps increase with the i5.

All things matching, they perform similarly. I would go with the R5-1600 since it costs a bit less overall.

I'd argue that minimums are more important, especially if one is only playing on an FHD 60hz monitor (assumptions).

Better minimums is much more important though as it prevents stuttering and other lagness, what is a few fps in average worth if whenever actions takes place you get those mini-freezes. My vote goes to the 1600 as the best gaming chip facing the i5 7600k...

Until you play BF1 or a similar high core game and the i5 just doesn't keep up.

 

A 1600/1400 or 7700 non k are the best pure gamimg chips as the difference between a 7700 and a 7700k may be a good one it's not enough to be worth it in many cases.

I'd argue both are important because they are. Those lows are only 0.1% of the overall frames and knowing only the minimums doesn't tell you the whole story. And if we're talking about 60Hz, the i5 gets it in nearly every title.
