Usb 3.2 announced

NumLock21

USB is getting so complicated. It was supposed to be 1 port for everything, but now there are three different standards. Hopefully 3.2 is fully backwards compatible like other USB revisions, but Thunderbolt 3 and USB type C together gets really complicated.

I dont even have a 3.1 usb device! so whatever you just keep on with the 3.x I'll catch up sooner or later.

FYI, USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 are the exact same standard.  For some inexplicable reason, they just renamed 3.0.

Isn't that what I just wrote?

Your wording made it appear as if it was two different standards with the same speed.  I was just clarifying that it was actually the exact same standard, not just the same speed.

USB 3.0 operates at 5Gb/s

USB 3.1 Gen 1 also operates at 5Gb/s

Some boards will only say they have USB 3.0 ports, while others will say they have USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. USB 3.1 sounds "newer and faster", but if it's Gen 1, then it's the exact same as USB 3.0.

That's the thing, there's no "also operates at", it is literally the same standard with a different name.  No change whatsoever.

USB 3.0 has retroactively been renamed “USB 3.1 Gen 1,” and it retains a theoretical transfer rate of 5.0 Gbps.

I know they are the same, why are you even trying to correct me?

I listed it out so others will know that USB 3.0 is the exact same as USB 3.1 gen 1 in terms of bandwidth.

Do you have any issue with it?

I just yesterday was discussing what might be on the AM4+ platform and said "new USB?". Lo & behold, the next day.  Haha.

Still, USB is finally getting to be point it's useful beyond basic connections & Sticks, which is great for everyone since it's so well supported.

I don't quite get it, maybe someone that knows more about the topic can illustrate us all, but the idea would be to use USBc with USB3.2 speeds, and if more speed is needed then thunderbolt 3? Because USB 3.2 is not only for USBA, right? Jesus what a mess

There's five total speed standards. And what makes things worse is just because a company can claim their product is compatible with a fast one doesn't mean they actually perform at that speed. However, that's the least of USB's worries. Type-C's alternate modes make people think every Type-C is capable of Thunderbolt, DP, and HDMI.

Don't worry guys, pretty soon we'll have a USB spec named worse than Apple's inability to properly name products.

I present to you the USB spec of 2020:

USB 6.9.abc.xyz.420.IEEE Type-C with Thumberdolt.42 supporting speeds of up to 1337Gb/s

* only if you buy a special $69.69 hardware licensing key/dongle which occupies the only USB-C port on your device, requiring you to buy a docking station which requires its' own dongle.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, RTX2060) Mobile: OnePlus 5T | Koodo - 75GB Data + Data Rollover for $45/month
Laptop: Dell XPS 15 9560 (the real 15" MacBook Pro that Apple didn't make) Tablet: iPad Mini 5 | Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 10.1
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 | Panasonic TS20D Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

Yep I know about that, and even in the case of supporting Thunderbolt you have to check if it's Thunderbolt 3, and even in the case of supporting Thunderbolt 3 you have to check if its using 2 or 4 lanes (for things like eGPU at least). Fucking crazy.

What I don't get is this new USB 3.2, is gonna be added to USBc and USB a?

Technically those are form factors. It should have no bearing on the signal protocol. Unless the new standard uses pins not on type A

Ah of course that makes sense. Then USB is not gonna try to compete against thunderbolt 3 speeds? Or I'm saying some nonsense impossible thing?

The lanes are within the physical usb type c cable.

Might as well just drop ethernet and start using USB-C for wired internet at this rate

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Well, considering that USB 3.2 has tones more bandwidth, it could support external GPU's and it could be an alternative to thunderbold 3.

Not sure how I could benefit from this.

Well maybe with so much bandwidth we can finally transfer more of the billions of colors promised by RGB on the fly for your mice and keyboards to look even nicer.

That or something boring like usb 3.2 10gigabit ethernet adapters.
