Usb 3.2 announced

The USB group has just announced usb 3.2. The new usb specs, under the existing usb type c, which was designed for future proofing via multi-lane support, allows usb 3.2 to operate as a multi-lane solutions, compared to the current usb, that's single lane only. This means usb 3.2 can either run as dual 5gb/s or dual 10gb/s operations. With dual 10gb/s operation, usb 3.2 brings in twice the performance compared to usb 3.1 gen 2, from 10gb/s up to 20gb/s.

 

So as of now, we have,

Usb 3.0 - 5gb/s

Usb 3.1 gen 1 - 5gb/s

Usb 3.1 gen 2 - 10gb/s

Usb 3.2 - 20gb/s

Nevermind I thought Thunderbolt 3 was 20Gb/s but its 40 Gb/s

I prefeer seeing this happening before a new and faster USB protocol. USB C was really promising, how long has it been since it launched? 3 years?

Something that really boggles me is... Why dont they just go: Aight we need something faster, we could double the speeds OR let's see we're at 10gb/s atm... What if we go to 100 gb/s or even 1 tb/s and then we dont have to worry about this shit for another 10 years?

Not until manufacturers get their shit together and start standardizing. With USB2, 3, TB3...etc...at least I knew what the fuck I was getting and what I could do with it. Type-c is a roll of the dice on what standards it supports and power delivery.

Anyway, this improvement seems fine, I guess. Though I do wish the increase in speed was a bit more substantial, not that that would be relevant for a while anyway.

New ports always roll out slowly. It'll likely be another few years before it's really mainstream, even on new devices.

Everybody corrected you on the bandwidth but I just want to say that that's not even the real issue. Thunderbolt 3 alt-mode has a lot lower latency than traditional USB connections, and that extra latency will cause issues for a GPU dock even moreso than the lack of decent bandwidth.

Because believe it or not, but developing these high bandwidth standards isn't that easy! Surprise surprise! Thunderbolt 3 is already hitting severe length limits on the cables with it's higher bandwidth to ensure signal integrity.

 

You could potentially do something with fibre optic or higher voltages, but then it wouldn't be backwards compatible.

USB 2 or 3, with or without USB PD...

 

As opposed to USB-A ports on laptops which could be USB 2 or 3, with or without USB Battery Charging...

 

Other than with Apple and phones/tablets, the ports are labeled with what they support just like USB-A.

The .x is to indicate small improvements with existing tech. The x.0 is for the big leaps.

well this update dasicly allows USB C to use all the pins.

in USB 3.0 it needs 9 pins, USB C has about 20 so it can be flipped with out worrying about witch side has the connections. but this update allows all the pins to be used to double the speed.

the reason they were all not used is for the alt modes and backwards comparability for USB A/B.

 

this update is very minor to add x2 speed to USBC connectors or possible allow for 2 USB A from 1 USB C.

With all these changes happening, I think it would be a great idea if manufacturers developed a modular USB port that would support the newer technology... But clearly that isn't how technology works. One thing would have to be 50 steps ahead of another thing in order to benefit from it.

And to save those numbers for when they create some super amazing iteration they have been cooking up since 2008, when 3.0 was released. Though that last bit probably won't happen, and they'll just keep announcing more 3.x releases. When they get to 3.9 they'll just add some letters to it (e.g. 4G LTE). The eternity of USB 3 shall not be stopped! Until USB dies, which it eventually will.
