3 pin fan connectors speed control?

stefanDB

just a simple question, if you have a cheap fan with a 3 pin fan connector, and you wire it to the motherboard, will it run at max speed all the time or will there still be some variation in it's speed depending on temperature?

It should run at max speed all the time. PWM/4-Pin allows you to control fan speeds. There are controllers you can buy though for 3-pin fan connectors.

it can be controlled, just not as good as PWM fans, they are voltage controlled instead of pulse width controlled. most motherboards should see you with some kind of controll but it wont be nearly as good as a PWM fan

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Speed can be controlled by motherboard and is dependent on fan profile in bios or temperature target.

All depends on if mobo supports DC fan controlling and if header you are using has controller chip. Most current mobos (2012/3 on wards) do. Maybe not with mobos own software, but with 3rd party software as in Speedfan. I currently control 3x3pin case fans with Speedfan.
