Should Linus to a 1 terabyte of ram project?

After Linus did the 1 petabyte storage setup, I thought He should do a 1 terabyte project for ram. Share your thoughts!

I can think of one application for a tb of RAM in the context of linus.  The 10 editors one pc rig thing he's thinking of doing with dual thread ripper and a bunch of GPUS could support the RAM but it would be an abject waste of RAM soooo....

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

why ? RAM is expensive and buying that much " for the lolz" isn't justifiable .

He was running out of storage space, so it is natural he would upgrade it. Is he having issues with his RAM? Probably not.

Well he could with that supermicro superserver(?) he used in 10/1 cpu, that can support up to 1.5 terabytes per cpu, so he could do a 3 terabyte ram one, although there was a lot of hoops to jump through when I tried to order that for my business's setup(got to love ram intensive custom programs)

Memory is expensive....

For 1 TB, you could go for example with a 4 cpu motherboard and with 32 x 32 GB memory sticks, for a total of 1 TB of memory but 32 GB sticks are expensive ($3-400 a piece) .. here's an example

If you go down to 512 GB, 16 GB sticks are more reasonable at around 50$ each.

and it's pointless anyway, they don't have anything that would be helped by so much memory.

linus should build a super computer

linus should build a UFO

linus should write his own operating system

linus should run a tech channel where he actually talks about things above retail level

This is about linus, it doesn't have to have a point(ie: x gamers 1 cpu)

The difference is that was a proof of concept. This has already been done before and Linus doesn't have a use for one.

It's also about being realistic ... the viewers of the channels are not what the server memory guys aim for, so there would be no sponsor interested in loaning them $10k worth of memory sticks for a week or more (to make a video), there's no benefit for anyone.

but it's as silly as building a machine that gives you 1000fps in games.. why do it? where is the lulz factor? "look at how much equipment i put into this drive".. linus videos are more like taking 20 fast usb drives and running them in raid for the lulz

So if linus has no need for it, whats the point of doing it multiple times?

I don't see a point(in doing) in any of what you said, yet I can see him doing that for...(what?) then again I picture the title: 3TB of Ram in one computer- Holy $hit ep. whatever

I don't think the viewers of the channel are interested in buying a petabyte of storage either. They still did it and got it sponsored by Seagate and it was a great video that many viewers of the channel enjoyed. I'm not saying a 1tb of ram video is or isn't a good idea but your argument is flawed.

Why not. Even just to show people something that they may not see everyday. He could use it as a ram cache for the editors on his 10g network. Would be faster for all that 8K video they got.

Yes I get that but its like building multiple sizes of vehicles when we know it will work already(ie: a monster truck will work in the same way as a prius: it can get you from a to b) If I am on the same track of thinking as you are: we should build a vehicle(s) up to the size of earth to prove that they will work.

They NEEDED the 1 petabyte storage (for the 8K recording they do for Youtube and for OTHER contract jobs/projects that may pay more like adverts, corporate training videos)

They would have bought hard drives anyway - my guess is the sponsorship was more like "give us a 20-50% discount on the drives and you'll get the name in the video" or we go with WD/HGST/Toshiba/etc

A 1 TB ram would be useless ... video would get few views, they wouldn't get to keep the memory as its too expensive not to mention the dual/quad cpu server to hold all the memory and honestly, some people/contacts are willing to waste their time with you up to a point .. rather than wasting an opportunity by making a crap 1 tb ram video, save that person's good will for better things.

You all know that you can use a normal storage device as ram right? So technically, it would only take a 1tb high speed ssd. Not $10K worth of ram sticks.

The ultimate RAMDisk.

Or the ultimate PrimoCache.

@MageTank Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.
