Just sold my r9 290 that I paid $220 for years ago, for $340 dollars

 

And bought a 1080 for 500

 

So after all the sales and everything, I upgraded to a 1080 (that gives me double the perfomance in basically everything) for basically 170 dollars ?

It's going to be a repeat of a few years ago where it's damaging AMD's long term customer base for their graphics cards.  People who want to game are just buying NV and become NV customers for life.

 

AMD dies without a graphics division generating cash for it.

There also made for compute, not just opengl/directx. This is what the chips where built to do

How exactly selling so much that stuff is going out of stock constantly is going to ruin the industry?

if miners take a majority of it then yes it will ruin the industry. when I am done with my rx 470 I will destroy it as to have it not ever be used for mining.

Gamers bought out RX 480s the moment they hit shelves at launch. Maybe they are hurting the people that need it for compute.

AMD's most popular card is 5 years old and behind 30 Nvidia cards.  Mining is a fad, gaming isn't.  If AMD were smart they'd gimp their cards so they can't be used for mining and sell separate cards that can only be used for mining at a higher price.

i was able to get mine january. well after the release date. it wasnt till Ethereum picked up till they started selling out again

Mining is a form of compute. If you gimped compute then amd would lose their massive share in compute.

Hasn't hurt NV at all.  They just sell Quadros and Teslas at a higher price for people who want compute.

 

AMD doesn't seem to understand that they're not going to be around in 5 years blowing their loads selling everything for < $300 and 30% profit margin.

How exactly is having all of your product getting sold supposed to be bad for AMD lol?

If anything this mining fad is the best thing that could have happened from AMD's point of view, all their old stock is sold out so they wont have to compete with their old product whenever they launch their new line. (Plus all that revenue they got from this)

So how exactly is the industry being ruined if said industry is profiting from a demand in their product? I.e literally the end goal of any industry. What if AMD takes the money they got from all these GPU sales and made an even better product? Would the industry have been ruined then? Your logic is inane.

I see a lot of rx480 and 580s for sale at around 450-500 euros where i live, if they realy sell for that much my dad will soon get a nice gpu upgrade.

If the open source driver on linux for the RX 480 wasn't so good, mine would be already sold. But hey good experience with linux and the added bonus of making $100/m from mining while my desktop is idle makes it hard to get rid of.
