That could still be better than my current 2-node OC FX cluster over ethernet.. But so are so many other things, the key is cost-effectiveness...

It's not quite apples to apples comparison.

 

Even so you can see at the bottom memory latency 140 ns and 23.5 GB/s memory bandwidth compared to Ryzen which has 80ns and 35 GB of bandwidth.

 

With just dual channel for each cpu, the performance of the Opteron would have been much worse due to all the copying of data between cpus and cache trashing.

Of course it isn't, and it won't be: one is a dual channel CPU, the other is a quad channel, quad socket server. 

That's the whole point, and that's why people saying "better Ryzen!" are wrong. 

We're not debating who has the better IPC. We're just discussing the fun of building this very specialized machine. (that's also why it has to be cheap). 

Isn't that what enthusiast do, playing with all sorts of computer stuff and learn, especially if they haven't tried before? 

Or has marketing convinced us that "enthusiast" means buying the most expensive toys even if we have no clue about what we're doing? :P

The opteron build wouldn't be cheap

 

You may find a quad cpu board for something like 100-200$ but it would be extended atx or full server board, which wouldn't fit in regular atx cases.

Then you'd have to also buy 4 proper heatsinks + fans for them ... if I remember correctly the heatsinks for the opteron screw to the case and not the motherboard .. so you'd need heatsinks and fans with backplate or something like that.

You can buy the processors cheaply on eBay but you don't get heatsinks and fans with them, that's extra 20-40$ a cooler .

Then you HAVE to populate the board with memory sticks, and some boards won't boot with less than 2 sticks per cpu or all sorts of issues like this.  Memory is not cheap when you have to buy lots of it... it's around 100-140$ for 64 GB of memory

Then you also need a power supply capable of powering the system .. these boards usually have at least 2 x 8pin eps connectors, and it's kinda hard to find cheap power supplies that come with two of these.. so you'd have to buy new power supply.

 

And you also have to look at it from the performance per dollar point of view ... you'd have 4 cpus with 120w tdp that barely do twice as much as a single cpu with 95w tdp... you realize how expensive your fun is when the electricity bill comes in your mailbox.

 

Anyway, yeah, it would be fun to build such a system to mess around with it, but it wouldn't be cheap... basically it's a bit too expensive just to make a 5-10 minute youtube video out of it.

for 64 cores you can host a massive website or have a web crawler, they dont need fast cores only plenty. As long as the architecture is similar to the amd phenom ii its still decent as thats better than the core2 architecture if comparing the manycore core2 xeons that are being sold. Its great for cracking, web crawling,mining and as your basement heater.

It can be fun to do that.

But it's low clock speed. Horrible IPC, power hungry, old.

 

Then again in my company we are using something like this for windows server 2008 r2 with over 50 active users.

For RAM you could go with a bunch of 2GB DDR3 ECC sticks, those are usually pretty cheap.
