I was recently on eBay browsing around for cheap server high core count CPUs. I remembered about AMD Opteron series and was interested in pricing. On eBay the 16 Core Opterons usually go for $50-$70 each. Pair that with the Dell PowerEdge quad socket server board and some RAM and you have a 64 core power house.

I was wondering what the communities opinions on this are?

Will it run Crysis on 1600FPS?       Just kidding no, IPC sucks on these probably.

Well this will suck power, like 500w idle. So running it all the time will be very expensive, like over 100 a month in power.

Speed wise, a dual 2011 is faster in most uses and only a bit more.

You also can't run desktop windows with a quad socket system.

Wow,64 CORES UNDER $300? Linus should make a video about that and maybe someone else, then its like "Go to hell!" for threadripper, even if it is slow cores for Opeteron,it is 4x more cores and ESPECIALLY,f*ck the 7700K and absolutely wreck the sh*tty celeron and the budget Pentium, wonder if it has HT (Not heard of a opteron before) so probably if there was a 8 CPU Motherboard then... Ok,seems like a VERY VERY SHINY DEAL!

You also can't run desktop windows with a quad socket system.

Windows 10 Pro For Workstation PCsTM aims to change that, allowing quad socket configurations, and 6TB of RAM. So if you could just wait for that...

I would already have it if I could find those prices over here... (Are those 627x Opterons?)

Except the $300 price doesn't seem to be true there either: the "grab a quad socket board" part can't be assumed to be exactly at $0... I don't expect you'll end up with a working 64 core system at $300, I can tell you that ($70-80 per CPU means you are at $280-320 for a start).

The best I've seen was around EUR 450 for a dual socket server with one 12 or 16 core Opteron (can't remember), and around EUR 550 for a dual socket server with both sockets occupied. And separate Opterons were all over the place. I honestly expect the bill for a quad-CPU server to be closer to $900-1000.

But hey, if you do find/build a 64-core system for ~EUR 300, send it my way, I'll pay for it :P

This may not be the most powerful Opteron chip but it is 16 cores.

You can look at http://cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php to get a sort of idea about what performance to expect from them.

Opteron 6276 is listed on that site as having a score of 9011 .. consider the Ryzen 1800x has a score of 15376 .

Also you'd need a lot of DDR3 ECC memory, maybe 4 or 8 sticks per cpu ... and most software would tend to stick to one CPU or would have slightly degraded performance if there's threads on multiple physical processors, and they'll use a lot of power.
