You'll need an expensive Z270 to overclock, a decent cooler too and it could match up a locked i5 at best

Whereas a locked i5 has a stock cooler and H110/B150/B250 comes very cheap

Get a G4560, some fast RAM [(16GB at 2800 or 3000MHz)], and a Z270 (this will work with Skylake's 6600K and 6700K as well).

This will allow you to make the most of your budget while enabling you to sell the Pentium (sell for server parts where the Pentium is most likely to sell) for an upgrade to a 7600K or 7700K.

Hardly, you'll be better off stepping down to a pentium g4560 or stepping up to a ryzen 5.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Ryzen 1400 would be the better choice. It is also on a socket that will get 1 or 2 more cpu revisions.

1500x or a 1400 4 cores 8 threads and comes with a decent enough cooler. Also can just buy a cheaper B350 motherboard. or wait till Ryzen 3.

Why buy i5 instead of ryzen?

i3 6100 is the best budget CPU before G4560 released because it has slightly lower clockspeed which wont make a different but same core count and HT it probably has the same IPC or better.

If u are on a really tight budget the G4560 is the best for you but i would save up and get Ryzen 1500x or 1400.

But ryzen 1400 costs 3x more.

3x more than a i3 6100? Newegg has it at $120 us and the 1400 at $160 us. I'm not a math expert but I'm 100% sure that's not a 3x price difference. There is also additional savings in the mother board if they are planning to upgrade to a k cpu later and need to get a z270 board now. Any half decent Am4 mobo will be able to overclock.

This is for gaming, correct?

In this case, modern titles do prefer a well balanced system with no obvious weak points. If you're planning to build for modern AAA titles, you may be better off saving a while longer.
