Get the 5820K and overclock it to 4.5-4.6GHz then :D

Hey there,

Since the announcement of ryzen, I have been contemplating about selling my intel parts (note: when I say parts I'm meaning cpu, mobo and ram)

for the same'ish price I bought them for (so £550) and going ryzen. now what really made me think about this was the announcement of X299.

So Theoretically if I were to be able to sell my intel parts for £550 which is similar (give or take £10) to what I bought them for, add an extra £30-50

and I could get a really nice ryzen system (R5 1600x, ax370 gaming k7 and 16gb corsair vengeance rgb @3ghz ).

However there's a caveat in that imo, with ryzen, your not getting much expandability as pcie lanes are limited, and that means not much room for

stuff like m.2 drives or gpus and nics etc.

However, another thought that crossed my mind was going x99, as I want an upgradeable platform that will last me 5yrs I guess idk

(ik I hate using the term futureproofing)

with decent upgradeability. as I do not have the money to go with threadripper, which would ultimately be the best choice so having a decent cpu on a good board

with the upgradeability to say go for a 6900k in 3yrs when I may need more pcie lanes is an option as my board would support it would be cheaper for me as I'm

only 15 so I cant exactly drop £800 on threadripper so the expandability is great as it means I can buy the stuff I need when I need it

and have it work for me great.

not to mention that if I where to get a 6900k for £220ish (there's a lot of them going for £260-280 where I can also offer a price)

and that the two boards I'm looking at (ASUS x99 deluxe or x99 strix gaming) is around £220 + £130 for 16gb ram (which I can upgrade to 128gb in the future I guess)

and that this platform should last a while for me if people rocking 2700k's where fine until now. that its the same price as the ryzen alt

and I have a lot more freedom in the future compared to being locked into a mainstream platform.

Lastly I would like to give a brief explanation on my workload and my current specs.

Spoiler

CPU: i5 7600k 5ghz @1.3v

Mobo: msi z270 gaming m5

Ram: corsair vengeance lpx 2x8gb 3000mhz

Cooling: noctua u14s

Storage: 250gb intel 600p + 400gb worth of laptop hdds

GPU: HD7850 2gb

Case: define s

PSU: EVGA supernova 750 g2

Spoiler

Workload:

Gaming

content creation

(video editing, coding html and learning other languages, creating graphics and animations using blender)

when I get more gpu's ill be dabbling into UN-raid.

So thoughts?

many thanks

Napalm :)

The 5820K is better than the 1600X in everything but I don't think it's worth the price premium.

I would go with ryzen, promised support until 2020 means you could get any mainstream cpu AMD releases for the next 3 years without getting rid of mobo/RAM

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

why are you comparing the 1600x with a 6900k? they arent even competitors :/ unfair comparison imo

I suggest waiting for low end threadripper, i.e. the 10c/20t 1955. Just see if its performance is any good.

Meanwhile, I think you should upgrade the hd7850 first. Seems so out of place with other parts

yea, I'm trying to sell the old system that the 7850 was apart of so I can buy a gtx 970 or maybe  580 if I can afford, tbh the 7850 plays all my games fine so not too big of an issue

Get a 5820K, the 6800K sucks because it doesn't overclock well ;)

ok, also I think I have a better chance at getting a 5820k for £200 than a 6800k

How is x99, any cons? that makes it a deabreaker

The only con is that you won't be able to upgrade to newer CPUs :D (Skylake-X is LGA 2066)
