I don't 17 is young for this fanbase. Most of the fanbase would be around 13-15, that is my guess atleast.

I'll be 28 in July. Sigh. I did however get into gaming when I was like 7, though. Had my own hand-me-down PC at like 13. A Pentium 166mhz with 96mb of RAM :) My dad and I used to play Duke Nukem 3D multiplayer across the serial port :P

This thread reminds me that I always think of things in my own frame of reference and that I need to remember a lot of posters are significantly younger than me and don't have the same life experience I do.  I've been gaming online longer than most of you have been alive and I've been working with hardware and software even longer.  I'll be 34 in Feb, I got into online gaming in 1997 and programming a couple years earlier...

I started programming when I was around 16. I didn't program constantly through the years, there was actually a long time where I didn't touch a computer besides playing games because I was working in sales/management, but I did go to school for Computer Science and I am working now as a senior systems programmer.

I'm gunna start my own club for over 35's, me 'n him are just gunna sit in PM and complain about you young blokes and what it was like when we were your age. :D

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

We probably got a whole bunch of 12-year-olds in here, even younger. That boy you mentioned just happened to designate himself as the "forum 12-year-old" but I estimate that there are other 12-year-olds... quietly hiding, waiting, in the shadows, but surely there.
