AMD cards are very good for ethereum mining, which has gone up in price a lot. People are buying the polaris line of cards for stupid amounts of money as most of them are out of stock and they want a good mining card.

People are buying all of them because there's a cryptocurrency craze right now, and AMD 400/500 series are perfect, since they're cheap, very powerful, and AMD GPUs are better at altcoin mining.

So cryptocurrency miners are buying them by the dozens, and now there's none left for consumers.

if you can find a 1060 6GB at a similar or cheaper price than a 480/580, take it.

Wouldn't you though? At normal prices their profit margin is probably 5-10%, maybe even less than that. But suddenly people are willing to pay double for the card and their profit margin jumps tenfold to 50%. It's easy to say those retailers are scummy for moving up the price but that's how a free market works. If demand goes up, price goes up.

the retailer i go to keeps that to a minimum, they instead profit off of being able to shift a metric shit ton of them on preorder.

But that's their choice. If they're able to profit using the different method than they are welcome to.

it's IMO the less douchebaggy way of doing things. and seeing how little retailers here use the price hike method, i feel like there's other benefits as well.

I'm pretty sure the profit is higher when raising the price. No matter how many pre-orders you get, you can only sell what stock you can get.

but profit is shallow compared to winning long term customers, which is what they try to attract. their profit on computer parts is low, but if they can win over some loyal customers those may also buy other things with higher margins.

The number of customers that build multiple PCs is very small. Having loyal customers in this industry is less important than others.

not if those customers may also be interested in other products you sell with higher margin, for example shavers, kitchen appliances (even small ones like a scale), 3D printers, and even barbecues.

As people have mentioned, supply and demand (noticed how RAM prices have risen during 2017? yeah that's that supply and demand thing).

Naturally, prices will come down assuming the demand drops and that AMD continues to supply them at the same or faster rate.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

The "retailers" we are talking about here are usually just Ebay or Amazon Marketplace or Newegg Marketplace scalpers. They are not real retailers, just some guys who buy up cards and then sell them at a profit. The fact that they operate through "real" retailers like Amazon or Newegg makes it seem like Amazon or Newegg is selling them at that price, but if you look closely, it is usually a third party seller.

In my experience, the proper retail outlets don't engage in such significant price hikes. They are just out of stock at regular price, until they come in stock at regular price.

Don't encourage these scalpers, and don't buy this stuff at those insane prices. The same happens with Nintendo products (NES Classic, Nintendo Switch), concert tickets, etc. etc. scalpers are just looking to make a quick buck without effort. It is despicable.

Yep, ETH is taking off at the moment.  Probably going to keep going to.  Right now I kicking myself for not nabbing those three RX580s I saw at Best Buy a few days back.  Was toying with nabbing one or two for tinkering or for MilkyWay Project crunching.

I just sold an RX 470 Red Devil 4gb for $330 USD on ebay.  Listed it saturday at like 1am, set a 3 day auction with a $225 reserve (semi-arbitrary amount to make it worth my effort), and marked it for free shipping to the US.

I bought this card for $160 after rebate in November, and it's been great ever since.  I sold it for $330, as used.  I used $300 of that money to buy a used air cooled Fury Nitro to run in my 1600X build until Vega benchmarks come out.  After $15-ish to ship the card out, and $10 in ebay fees, I'm still coming out ahead.  The 470 is one of the best purchases I've ever made.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.
