Should I wait for Volta or get pascal?

Hey LTT Forums this is my First Post on LTT Forums and on any tech forum in August this year I'm planning to get my build together consisting of a i7 7700k an MSI gaming pro carbon but for the graphics card I was originally planning for a 1070GTX but then after the Volta leaks I'm confused on waiting for Volta or buying the 1070 I can wait 3 months after august (I don't wanna make the same mistake as my cousin as he bought a 980ti and then 3 months later pascal launched) Pls Help Me Out LTT Forums!:(

Before you choose, wait until Volta is announced, then decide.

Or just buy it now because Volta's atleast a year away.

How is buying a 980TI (topend segment) relevant to buying a 1070 (midrange segment). It won't nearly be the same cut in value. Besides, expect the top-end models to launch first, and that 3 month date could be a paper launch. The "2070" could still be a long way away, specially with VEGA being delayed.

FYI, the 1070 recently got a pricecut, if you've got the money and require the graphical performance now, just get it.

Just get the 1070, you'd be waiting at least another year for Volta.

If they announce Volta at SIGGRAPH 2017, then problem solved.

When? I thought Huang said GeForce coming this year, at his Computex speech.

Volta wont be out until around Q1-Q2 next year, up to you if you can wait that long. A used 980ti could be good until then (If you can find it at good price, otherwise 1070 if you want to spend a little for for one new).

They were referring to the GV100, which isn't a consumer product.

I will skim through a presentation again, because I swear he casually mentioned they will announce gaming GeForce this year, unless I was hearing things.

Do you have a link about next year's launch?

I would also consider Ryzen for CPU and Vega (when it comes out) for GPU.

We cannot say how Vega is going to put up against 1070/1080, but surely Ryzen offers more bang for the buck than Kaby Lake.

No one knows when Volta is coming out. It's pointless to ask what gpu to get in early June if you're not going to be doing a build until August. Maybe the GTX 1080 gets a further price cut (I think it's already a better deal than the GTX 1070). Maybe AMD has a killer value cutdown Vega chip when they launch in July. And I wouldn't discount the possibility @MysticLTT mentioned, that Nvidia could launch GV104 early to spoil Vega's launch. It's exactly what they did to spoil the Fury X launch a couple of years ago. A couple of days before Fury X was to be paper launched Nvidia gave a hard launch to the GTX 980 Ti and AMD ended up pushing back their launch another couple of weeks. AMD was set to offer Titan X level performance for $800 and Nvidia swooped in and offered it for $650 with the 980 Ti.

By late July to early August we should know a lot more about the gpu landscape since Vega will have launched and Nvidia will have possibly done something to counter, be it a price cut, a launch, a launch announcement, a strong game bundle, or perhaps nothing if Vega flops. Who knows? Coffee Lake might even be nearing launch by then.
