NVMe 960 EVO as boot + RAID 0 SATA for games ?

Hi,

 

I currently run my X99 Sabertooth in Sata configuration: RAID mode with a 128GB Sata3 SSD for Windows and two 500GB Sata3 SSD in RAID0 for games.

 

Now that NVMe has been out for some time, I wanted to upgrade my windows drive to a 960 EVO 500GB. At first, I wanted to sell my 3 SSD and buy a 1TB model for Windows + games, but I think that my RAID0 is more than fast enough for games, so I can keep using it and save some money by buying the 500GB model. The 128 GB SSD starts to fill up too quickly.

 

Can I keep the RAID0 Sata while using a NVMe drive as boot ?

If you change to the single NVME you will decrease boot times due to not having to initialize the raid.

It's honestly not worth it though... NVMe drives don't hold any advantage over SATA SSDs when booting up or launching apps. In fact, I'm not even sure if you need RAID0.

The RAID0 comes from the fact that my WD Black 1TB gave up on me a few years ago and I decided to go all in PCMR for my games drive. I told myself I would break the RAID0 if it was completely useless and use one of the disks for Windows if needed. Until now, I never needed more than 80 GB for my Windows and sometimes, my RAID0 was quite useful. I remember booting really fast compared to my friends in ARK: Survival Evolved. It was in early access (still is I think?) so maybe it's not a reference...

And they have SSDs?

 

Still though, a 960 evo isn't needed. It won't improve boot times at all.

I see that, even for workloads involving Visual Studio, no gains are to be expected... I had some hope for game engines like Unity, Unreal Engine and tools like Visual Studio, programming, but it seems not.
