"How Old Or New is your PC?" is a flawed question, that question is subjective and any data collected off that is meaningless.

 

"How Many PC's Do you Have?" is also a flawed question since the data collected is also meaningless since there is only two data points, so there is nothing to compare

I  built my PC two years ago, upgraded the GPU and CPU (to an older CPU) last year, but the CPU is pretty old and on the x79 platform while the GPU is brand new. Where do I fit in?

True. Or at least "New" and "Old" aren't answers to "how old is your PC". It could work if OP gave a common, arbitrary definition for new and old (like "older than X", "newer than X").

Not true. This question is well defined, as "one" and "multiple" span all the possibilities (other than not having a PC) without any ambiguity. You are confusing potential outcomes with data points: there are only two potential outcomes, but as many data points as answers. It's a perfectly normal binary variable.

Yes, there is data and the question is valid and clear, but that data doesn't mean anything, you cannot conclude anything meaningful from it, it would be a valid option if the question was binary, but the fact it is not.

I don't see why. The question is whether you have 1 or more, and you can learn how many people has 1 computer vs how many have multiple computers...

The question is fine, it just will be useful for some purposes and not for others. We can't judge its usefulness without having a particular "research goal" in mind.

Just like the binary question "do you have kids?" (which means "=0" or ">0") can be useful in some contexts, while in others you may need the detail of "how many kids you have?" (from 0 to +infinity).

What about us with upgraded PCs?

Mine is originally build 10 years ago and it has been upgraded every now and then but it still has some original components (couple of fans, HDD and probably DVD-drive) so, basicly it's not old but it's also not new. Current build is only 3 months old (upgraded GPU and perfected cable management), but majority of the build is now ~4 years old (upgraded MB, CPU, RAM and PSU then). Also I have build and upgraded my ex-wifes PC with my old parts and she basicly now has my original PC. So, I'm in "Ship-paradox" class ("If you change one part of a ship every month to a new part and when every part has been changed, is the ship still the same ship you started with? And if you store every original part and assemble them to form a ship, is it the original ship?").

What counts as "old"? I got 1.5yr laptop which I see as new.

Had an old Pentium 4 SFF machine that I got rid of when I moved, but I currently have:

 

1. My main PC, specs are in my signature.

 

2. My main laptop, an ASUS UX31LA that I got for $350 (yay!)

 

3. Some iMac, can't remember exactly which model, but it's one of the older ones with the black plastic backs. I had a newer, mid 2010 one that I sold for $300.

 

4. My old laptop, an ASUS X200CA, still works although it isn't in the best condition.

 

5 My Dell Vostro 3555, I got it from a university along with the 2 iMacs, for FREE! It had a password, but the password hint was the password (thanks previous owner )

 

6. A bunch of parts (only a drawer, but it's a lot to me )

anyway i have a few more but they arent worth mentioning, im trying to sell both the LAN PC and the last one i listed right now to funt the Toaster Project and an upgrade of my main PC. i really want them to sell for a total of more then $400 but im not sure thats happaning tbh. il see what i can get for the parts but then il be left with cases i dont know what to do with  really need the cash from them so if anyone wants to come take them of my hands for some cash PM me lol. the Toaster Project is the most interesting one seeing as the case is the best thing ever. i cant even express in words how much i love it but the fact that i bid a similar case up to over $80 should start to tell you the story lol(i didnt get it tho some dude dropped $80 and pick up in 5min before i could respond lol). i have gone through a lot of hardware with the LAN PC aswell, last time i counted i had spent a total of around $500 on it for all 6 or 7 generations its been through in the last year but now its going to get replaced with the Toaster Project which is going to be vastly more powerfull  i really wish i wouldent have sold the I5 680 + motherboard and RAM i had though seeing as that for some reason seemed to be able to use the RaptorX drive way better then this Sabertoothe board... the LAN PC is a pice of shit because the harddrive is slow as a slug and its always maxed out and makeing a load of noice. i think im going to go for a SSD for the Toaster Project or one of the 1TB drives i bought a few days ago. i am also probably changeing my sound card in my main PC to a SoundBlaster Z that was in the LAN PC for a while but that i recently removed together with some of the super nice fans in it that i dont want sold
