3 Monitors, 1 GTX 1080 TI

Am I able to game on 1 1440p monitor, and 2 1080p monitors at the same time with a GTX 1080 TI, primarily GTA V and Black Ops 3

As in surround? They will all be running at 1080p, shouldn't be a big issue for a 1080ti.

You can't span games on three monitors with different resolutions.

Would I be able to change my resolution to 1080p on my 1440p monitor and use it in NVIDIA surround with my 1080p monitors

You can but 1080p scaling on a 1440p monitor looks kinda terrible.

I am aware that upscaling a lower resolution looks kind of bad, I want to be able to play games in 1440p then just for poops and giggles go into NVIDIA Surround and have fun in GTA V, but how bad does 1080p look on 1440p, is it terrible or bearable

Depends on your preferences, I think it's unbearable.

I really don't want to give up buying a 1440p monitor, because I heard it's waaaaay better than 1080p for gaming, so i don't know if I should go with 3 1080p's or not

I would personally stick to 1x1440p and wait until GPUs are powerful enough to span games across three of them. Until then, I'd go single monitor and have some cheap auxiliary ones.

That would be a good idea, thank you for helping me

3x1440p displays is 1.333...x as many pixels as a 4k display (assuming the 1440p screens are 16:9). So if you go for a 3x1440p setup you can expect about 45 fps on all three screens where you would have had 60 fps on a 4k display. If you decide to go for 3x1440p screens just multiply any 4k benchmark results by 0.75 to get a rough approximation of the fps on the 3x1440p screens. It will give you a pretty good idea of what graphics card(s) you will want for your system. This is just a rough approximation though.

But wouldn't the power of the graphics card be a big factor in the equation, unless the FPS you were saying were a representation of what the GTX 1080 TI would do, because that what I'm getting, so with a 1080 TI I would get 45 FPS on 3 1440p's, that's really good in my opinion since I play 30 on console, and yes, this will be my first gaming pc, I've always been a console player, but I'm making the switch.

Yes the power of the graphics card would make a big impact on fps. You can determine the 4k performance of a card by watching benchmarks on youtube (I keep going back to 4k because 4k benchmarking videos are widely available to demonstrate performance... I suggest checking out the youtube channel called digitalfoundry) and then multiply the 4k average fps by 0.75 to approximate the 3x1440p fps. 3x1440p is a very rare setup so you won't see many benchmarks of this, that is why multiplying 4k fps by 0.75 is so helpful.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Determine a frame rate you deem appropriate for gaming.
  2. Look at 4k benchmarks (preferably gaming over synthetic) that use multiple types of graphics cards to determine what video cards will be required to meet playable 4k results (I suggest using digitalfoundry as a resource here).
  3. Multiply the 4k benchmark fps by 0.75 to approximate the 3x1440p display fps.
  4. Narrow the graphics card list by determining whether or not the frame rate you just calculated is high enough on each card (obviously the cards that don't crank out enough fps get eliminated from the list).
  5. Look up whether or not the games you play support sli or crossfire (if you find some good deals this may be worth considering, but I suggest you try to avoid sli or crossfire if possible since this is your first build... at least that's the impression I get)
  6. If you play many games that don't support sli, scratch off sli from being an option (same goes for crossfire if you go with AMD, actually if you can't use crossfire you'll have to eliminate all AMD cards since they just won't be powerful enough today to drive a 3x1440p setup with any single gpu graphics card).
  7. Buy the card you think best works for you based on the remaining options on your list.

Hint: All that'll be left is the GTX 1080ti, maybe GTX 1080, or Titan X(P) (rendered obsolete by 1080ti).

Better off sticking to 1080 surround. The cards are still to weak. You can be happy with low frames but the frame time will also suffer and that effects games way more.

I need to get a second gtx 1080 again so I can actually turn the graphics up on 1080 surround.

  • 1 month later...

What about 3 displays at  3840x2160 - can this card handle it? or do I need 3? if so, is this card worth it, if I am not that interested in games?

A lot of cards can support almost any res. Especially if not for gaming. One card with a dp can daisy chain and do that.

If I am doing desktop stuff like web development, is this card worth it? is scrolling etc gonna be super smooth and the UI extra responsive, or is it just a waste of money? I might try some gaming, but I havent played PC games since Starcraft and I dont mean 2 :) My dream setup would be to have the 3 work monitors in 4k and also run a 65" TV in 4k. maybe not at the same time - but I do want to be able to push some pixels :)

If you mean this card, being the 1080ti then yes. Any flagship could do that.
