just couple hours ago, Feral Interactive, the studio that originally ported MadMax to Linux has opened a BETA for the Vulkan API

to access the BETA you 1st need to own the game; then use livelongandprosper in the properties, BETAs tab in STEAM

 

other requirements:

Feral has also added a benchmark mode, that's unique to Linux for now; to launch a benchmark use --feral-benchmark in the launcher options

edit: added Phoronix benchmark runs - for now, these runs are only with AMD Radeon hardware (RadeonSI OpenGL vs RADV Vulkan); Phoronix is currently testing GeForce and will add Intel results too 

will add those to the OP as soon as they're released and I wake up

RADV is a open source unofficial Vulkan driver for Radeons, started by David Airlie from Red Hat

this exists because AMD has yet to release a open source driver for Vulkan

maybe they'll do some AMDGPU-PRO testing, because the RADV ones are .. pathetic

I will link this post when everyone compares a 1060 with a 480. Because they only need to play Mad Max on linux.

What's fascinating is that it's an NV card that gained such boost. Makes you wonder how horrible really OpenGL was, and I'd bet still is on many games. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Ridiculous gains haha... Well this is why Linux gaming need Vulkan so badly...

 

And it's just the beginning of a beta, it's gonna get better obviously.

 

You've got to say though, their openGL implementation must have been really bad. Or else no way you can gain that much...

what Linux needs is just support in general, it needs real graphics drivers and then it need more developers to support other things but direct x

Linux support is lightyears better ahead of what it used to be 3 years ago. So are the drivers. From the time I got my R9 290 to today the difference is night and day... That whole ecosystem is heading in the right direction. From the games, to the tools, the game engines, APIs etc...

 

Of course if you want to compare the number of games to windows then it will look bad because windows is the worlds leading platform for core gaming.

Because I doubt Avalanche Studios mismanaged openGL so poorly.

Of course if you want to compare the number of games to windows then it will look bad because windows is the worlds leading platform for core gaming.

You would have to do a relative comparison, it was going good with amd making drivers but then 16 LTS came out and they didn't bother updating.

Among other things yes. I read all the time that Linux drivers are getting better and are good atm, but when I see this, they are good compared to what? 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Crikey! The avg_fps of the 4 benchmarks went from OpenGL to Vulkan:

  1. 36 to 97
  2. 29 to 43
  3. 43 to 86
  4. 50 to 103

Of course the settings are the same - basically all max apart AA - on a nVidia 1080 (drivers 378.13) at 3440x1440. Speechless. In a good way :-)

OpenGL is a nightmare to tune. It's not that it lacks any sort of performance capability vs. DX 11, but it is a very stateful way of programming, and that makes it extremely tough to tune. You plug one hole and then a cork comes flying out elsewhere and it's just a mess.

This is also true, especially if they just used the standard open-source ones instead of Nvidia's proprietary one.
