Kids, and some weird adults, like to put foreign objects into their mouths for some reason. Nintendo thought things through, had some board meetings about having other board meetings etc etc, to talk about coating the small Switch cartridges in Denatonium Benzoate. At least it's not Dihydrogen Monoxide, because everyone who comes in contact with that stuff dies.

The Verge actually asked Nintendo themselves to see what they'd say, and they do indeed confirm that this is intentional to keep young children from eating the small cartridges.

I decided to Google/Wikipedia this compound and this is what I found.

In 1995, the U.S. state of Oregon required that denatonium benzoate be added to products containing sweet-tasting ethylene glycol and methanol such as antifreeze and windshield washer fluid to prevent poisonings of children and animals. This and other requirements were the end result of a campaign started by Lynn Tylczak in 1989. In December 2012, U.S. manufacturers voluntarily agreed to add denatonium benzoate to antifreeze sold nationwide.

Well, I for one am glad that it is a law to put this compound in antifreeze and windshield washer fluid so children won't drink it.
