Can i skip 1440p gaming?

LyricalRain018

For those of you playing at 1440p, how much of a difference does it make over 1080p? Also, what is the approximate increase in money required for maintaining 1440p gaming? Currently, a gtx 1070 is perfect for 1440p, so will the gtx 1160 be enough for 1440p probably? Will it be okay to maintain 1440p financially? I am fine with playing in a mixture of mid-high settings.

I plan to build a pc, so should i go for 1080p or 1440p?

It depends. The added clarity of 1440p is noticeable over 1080p. Also nowadays most cards are pretty capable at 1440p. For example the rx 470 which only costs about 150$ nowadays can handle quite a lot of titles at medium-high settings at 1440p without any issues.

Makes done to me. Certain gameplay changes but not worth going out of my way to get and use. I watch tv on my laptop with my 1440 gsync now.

Now if your talking ultrawide, then it's great if you got the power to push it. I'm still on my surround 1080 as that's the only way I can play.

Really depends on the game and if you feel fov is a restriction on 1080p.

Refresh rate > resolution. I don't notice a huge difference with 1440p, not enough to make me upgrade my system (if I had to) Just get a really nice 1080p monitor now, and a 4k monitor a couple of years down the line when the technology matures. Skip the stepping stone 1440p all togeather, like most people skipped from 480p to 1080p, missing 720p because it's pointless.

Right. I am thinking the same way. If my pattern in nvidia gpus is correct (one gen's x80 ti is as good as the next gen's x70 - gtx 780 ti and gtx 970 are equal, gtx 980 ti and gtx 1070 are equal), then the 1170 would be as good as the 1080 ti, and the 1270 would be as good as the 1180 ti. So maybe 4 years later, the gtx 1270 would be the perfect card for 4K gaming, right?

If 1080p isn't cutting it for you, and you aren't willing to shell out $2,400 for 2 Titan XP cards (but you're not going to get far past 60hz panels without turning down settings), then yes.

Yea. By then 4k will basically be the standard and the 1270 will crush 4k and some titles at higher rez.

If you play on a big monitor, lets say 24 inches or bigger, 1440p makes a huge difference over 1080p. Ive got a 27 inch 1440p monitor, and the difference is very noticeable when sitting normal distance from that monitor.

I dont agree with people who say just wait for 4k. Driving 4k is waaay more demanding, so you would need a way more powerful pc. Driving 1440p is not that much more demanding.

If you are getting a new monitor anyway, get 1440p. If your old monitor is still fine, or if you want a smaller monitor, 1080p is fine too. I wouldnt purposely buy a 1440p monitor as an upgrade.

But if you are getting a new one anyway.. 1440p is nice for productivity etc as well.

Is it a good idea to build a 1080p rig now and upgrade to 4K when it comes down in price, something like 2 generations later? Cause i dont think 1440p is that big an improvement in gaming.

yes it is

UHD for AAA gaming right now is not attainable without making huge sacrifices in costs and/or quality settings

yah i cant see why not tbh

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

To be honest, i never tried 1440p gaming either, but since i have been using a 180p screen and a 4k tv that is hooked up to a htpc, i personally think that 1080p is best for gaming. I say stick to a 1080p but high refresh rate monitor and upgrade later down the road.

Well frankly a rig with a RX480 8GB or a 1060 6GB is a more than capable 1440p high/ultra 45fps+ machine soooo...ya know :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

1440p @27"+ is the perfect sweetspot. Below that,  1080p is just fine. 4k isnt worth the huge fps loss if you havent 2 badass gpu's working without issues.

Ive been having this same dilemma for the last 2 years lol. Im about to upgrade my gpu to a gtx 1080ti and was thinking of upgrading my monitor to a 1440p gsync 144hz.

Im sticking with my 1080p 120hz 3D monitor. Why you say well it comes down to FPS in games. I went to a friends house today he had a 1440p 144hz monitor with a pascal titan x and playing games like witcher 3 and mafia 2 and watchdogs 2 he was getting no where near 100fps at times he was hitting below 60fps shit man. He changed his monitor "he has 2" to a 1080p one and played the same games. he was hitting near well over 100 fps in the very same games. Only mafia 2 and watchdog 2 dipped to low fps.

Yes the graphics are nice and better in 1440p i would say and yes g gsync is great. HOWEVER from my personal experience. The increase in graphics difference from 1080p to 1440p does not warrant £600 pounds for a 1440p monitor in my country. And the fps hit is too much if you want to stick to one card and make it last with high FPS well over 60 for the next 2 or 3 years. IF however money is not a problem then SLI might be a good idea then get a 1440p 144hz any day.

Also if you play on a 1080p 60hz monitor atm then upgrade that. if your on a 120hz "like myself" or a 144hz 1080p monitor stick with that. It all depends on if you like high graphics over FPS verus YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.

It depends. 1440p 60hz is not a worthy improvement, you'll need a bigger GPU and the jump in resolution is not worth it. But if you go 1440p 144hz, then you will be able to even skip 4k and wait for the next best thing in the future. There's nothing better than 1440p 144hz right now apart from ultrawide experiences. I wouldn't recommend waiting for 4K. It's limited to 60hz, and even if we had 4k 144hz monitor, we simply don't have any GPU in the market that would make a monitor like that justice.

It makes a significant, and noticeable, difference versus 1080p. Driving games at 1440p obviously involves more expensive hardware, and that won't change for awhile. If I were you, I'd go for a 1440p, high refresh rate monitor. The one in my signature is pretty good!

Keep in mind that you also require less Anti Alaising for 1440p, depends on the game , but i keep it off on some games.

I belive a 1160 Should be enough.

First you'll notice a sharper image, and more detail in the game. a little bit easier to spot enemies in arma and warthunder. Depends on the screen size also.

Am I the only one here who doesn't feel "perfect" the appropriated word for the GTX 1070 performance on 1440p? it is the sweetspot in cost sure but not "perfect", I would still go GTX 1080 for 1440p, at least.

You could just skip it no problems on that but these higher resolutions are very demanding I doubt the GTX 2060 will be capable of providing the best 1440p experience... the GTX 2070 sure as it'll be more or less on pair with the GTX1080ti... but for 4k with a single GPU waiting for Volta is quite needed... the GTX 2080 and Titan XV will be the true first 4k cards in my opinion, the GTX 1080ti and Titan XP at least for me felt like the ultimate 1440p cards which in sli will finally give acceptable high end 4k performance.

im getting a gtx 1080ti and it makes sense to upgrade to 1440p 144hz. TBH its allready ordered the GPU and monitor. So there is no backing out now lol. Wanted more space on my desktop anyway and since 4k is way too small on the text. 1440p is ideal atm.

That's also not how Nvidia works. Nvidia will re brand cards (but for the most part, not with the high end), but they wont "tweak" architecture and call it something new (unless they change their ways really quick for some odd reason).
