Six major movie and TV studios have dropped their lawsuit against the defunct file-sharing software LimeWire. The companies sued the software maker and its owner Mark Gorton last year, looking for more than $200 million in damages. Previously, the RIAA won $105 million in damages from the company and through the lawsuit the movie studios hoped to get their piece of the pie. The studios haven’t explained why they chose to dismiss the case.

Now there's a shocking surprise. Not really much more to say on the matter until we find out why they dropped the lawsuit. What are your thoughts on this?

I wonder what goes through their minds when they ask for something ridiculous like 200 mil. It's not like the movie business is scraping the bottom of their wallets yet they sue like it actually affect's their livelihoods. All your moneys are belong to us.

If people watch something off of limewire, they are more likely to pay for that product or similar product in the future if they liked it. It's basically a "trial" to get the consumer hooked in a different way now.

It's not about them needing the 200Mil, its about limewire not being able to pay it and having to declare bankruptcy.   Its like forcing them into poverty.

I hope they dropped the case because the legal system recognizes the creators of lime wire didn't actually pirate anything. which means the previous court action may be overturned.

Are they not liable for enabling piracy to some degree?

I don't know.  If they are not liable for enabling it, then that may be why the case was dropped. On the other hand proving that they are liable may not be an issue but proving the extent of the damage they are directly liable for maybe too difficult.

Perhaps they've realised that LimeWire is probably broke and not worth the thousands in court fees to recoup nothing. Was LimeWire a real company?

I guess it's possible that limewire (and the person who created it) have already declared bankruptcy or are so broke that they no longer need to pursue them.  They can put their money into chasing the next threat so to speak.

Last time i used LimeWire was 2008. It was quite bad, because everytime you searched something, at least 10 fake virus files came up as on top.
