Well, I guess now its between the 6900k and the 5820k. Thoughts?

Imo , i wouldn't a 5820k considering the 6800k is out . 6900k is a bit more powerful ( 8 cores , 40 pcie lanes ) , but it's nearly 3 times as expensive . On the other hand , that might not be such an issue considering you wanted to go 6950x . It's up to you .

The 7700k and 7900k are literally around the corner, if you go for the 6900k there would be a new model that comes out right when you buy it, I would go for the 5820k or wait.

Yeah but... you waited this long new CPU's don't come out that often if you want it now then just get what's out there now.

oh . In that case it might be worthwhile considering the 6800k is at best 5% faster clock for clock and overclocks worse than the 5820k.

But Ryzen is coming out in ~february , so if you can , wait . I wouldn't recommend buying a new cpu atm.

Any source . As far as intel is concerned , skylake X is scheduled for 2H 2017 , that's 6+ months away , for minimal performance enhancements over BDW-E

That's all irrelevant, If you buy a 5820k you will still need that board and that ram, the difference in price remains the same, as for currency again, the difference between the 2 builds should be same

It performs fine for gaming, go look at all the comparisons. Even linus did a comparison and it's very close to an i7.

Obviously it performs worse, but is cheaper and you can get more cores for less money which is more important for rendering.

linus did a comparison of a xeon vs an i7 at the same clock speed though ( i7 4790 vs e3 1276v3 ) . the high core count xeons all have fairly low frequencies in the 2ghz range , with single core boost in the low to mid 3ghz range . and that's not counting on overclocking , which any X99 owner should be doing anyway

Modelling is multithreaded. I use sketchup and solidworks, they are using 4-8 cores constantly.

Almost all Xeons are base over 3GHz and there are many that boost to 4GHz or more. Go look at ARK, you might learn something.

Oh, and the performance is very close if you look at benchmarks, which is why so many people use xeons for gaming.

Xeons will allow you to get more than 10 cores per CPU, at less money than the ridiculous $1500 for the 6950x.

I think you have a lot to learn about xeons... please do more research.

show me a 6-10 core xeon with a base frequency of over 3ghz which is cheaper than it's i7 counterpart. Obviously , there is the e3 line , but those are all quad cores . Plus they are locked . Don't get me wrong , i'm not defending the 6950x , and i don't recommend anyone get one . but the 6800k or 6900k ( or haswell e equivalents) are still good values
