Matters on how many cores you are using I am fairly sure. If you have two 20 core chips the second one will not get touched at all. If you had, for some reason, a dual i3 system it would be on par with an i7 effectively.

I'm unsure on that. I don't know if the system would opt to run everything on CPU 1 first. As it sees threads as logical cores, it may just use CPU 1 as 4 threads/logical cores and then use CPU 2 if it's going to use more than 4 "cores".

Windows doesn't actually care. It treats it all as just one CPU but will tell you if you have two sockets. I do believe that the chipset does all the rest.

Why not wait for the 1080 Ti, and get a i7 5820k and a 1080 Ti.

The i7 6950X value is GARBAGE. Even if you do a lot of intense work, avoid it.

God knows if it will exist, Nvidia hasn't said anything in CES about it.

the 5820k is also fine for all your work i am just saying if you plan on using for pro work only get a 6950x if you plan on using for everything get the 5820k setup, both are really good. the 5820k is the best bang for your buck high end CPU intel has and would highly recommend it.

I am planning to release a video game, so it will be professional. However, this will also be my casual everyday system

becuase there is absolutely no guarantee we'll be getting one ?

Nvidia hasn't said anything about it , and titan XP is already a cut down gpu .

To OP. why not get a 6900k and spend the left over 700$ for a gtx 1070 and maybe a monitor ?

Or you could get ryzen when it comes out

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

I tried that, but its not in my budget :( unless I stick with one 1070 or get two 1070's and get a worse monitor

6900k is middle of the road last year 5960x is a bit cheaper and offers the same performance.

assuming you can find a new one for less than the 6900k ( older new cpus never go down in price). Unless op is willing to go for used , which i i personally wouldn't be when spending ~1000$ , he might get something , but no guarantee .

What monitor do you have now , and what monitors are you looking at ( best case and less than best case)?

well, my current monitor is a 24 inch 1080p 60hz TN display. I was hoping to go for an asus pg279q or an asus pg278q

that would be a nice choice . It all depends on how much you need to rely on a monitor for your project.

well, the ips display would be nice for content creation, but I also do heavy gaming so the 144hz would really benefit me

forget about 144hz IPS @ 1440p. they are either prohibitively expensive or non-existent . Imo ,  ROG monitors are too expensive .

But what about these ?:
