Is buying an ES Xeon okay if returns are accepted?

I want that 12c xeon but it's an engineering sample, is it okay? I heard they can be broken or break easier or such, or be worse in general, but it's 50$ cheaper returns are accepted.

I bought a Xeon E5-2695V3 a while back, the only issue I had is that all CPU programs and even the BIOS reports as Intel Generic CPU or something like that. But it's about a year later and it's been fine. I also run it 24/7, and sometimes under full load for rendering. I plan to get two more Xeon for a Dual Xeon workstation setup in the future.

 

I'm pretty sure they're illegal, but they're cheap. haha.

 - Intel ES Processors are not for sale or re-sale.

Well do you think being legal and seeing the cpu name is worth going from a gtx 1070 to 980ti? 10% delta.

If you ask me then yes, get the non ES and the 980Ti.

Not all motherboards work with ES CPUs either

Those sellers do not own these CPUs, neither do you, these CPUs belong to Intel. If Intel wants to, they can ask you to give it back to them...

Plus, they are called ENGINEERING samples, not review samples, so they have imperfections and are not able to reach their boost speeds

Do you plan to game? If so, do not get a Xeon. They are really bad at it. My Xeon will downclock to 2.2GHz if all cores are under load.

 

I own both a used 980 Ti and a 1070, the 980 Ti edges out on CUDA heavy applications like 3D modeling and rendering using iray. The 1070 uses less power though, like 40-50W, up to 70w less if you like Furmark / MSI kombustor.

 

I don't own many games, I only have the neptunia series of games. On the newer neptunia game at 4KHD, the 980 Ti wins. However, I'm pretty sure if you were to play other normal games, the 1070 would win. I think the only benchmark the 1070 won in was 3DMark Firestrike and Time Spy, but not by much.

 

Keep in mind I overclocked both GPUs to the limits. 1070 at 2.1GHz, and 980 Ti at 1.5GHz. I have both a used 980 Ti (Gigabyte Gaming G1), and a used 1070 (MSI Gaming X).

The thing about Xeons is that they only reach boost speeds if you have 1-4 cores under load. If you have all cores loaded, they do stay at base clock speed. All high core count Xeons do this.

 

And yeah, I think if you update the BIOS on some boards, they may remove support for ES chips.

ES Xeons usually have Turbo-Boost disabled as they are not exactly "stable"...

Mine turbo boosts just fine. Even in retail Xeons, if you read reviews, they do stay at base clock speed / lower core speed if all cores are loaded.

I know, I am just saying that many ES Xeons will have that disabled,but, of course, there are exceptions.

Personally, I'd say go for it if the price is right. Just be aware that you won't have a warranty should anything go wrong in the long-term.

Go for an i7 then, the xeon will only help if you are running 6-8 vms, if you need more then 128Gb of ram or ecc ram, or you have a program that can use all 24 threads.

 

As for gaming performance an i3 would be better choice then most of the higher core count xeons.

 

Also chrome tabs need a lot of ram not really cpu usage, and any modern cpu can run a VM (virtual machine), it would be harder to find one that didn't support virtualization.
