Study finds American internet prices are "too damn high"

Cam_Is_Me

"obligatory comment remind everyone about Australia, the first world country with third world internet."

Seriously, stupid study is stupid. the Americans doing these studies need to stop whinging, and remember they're comparing themselves to smaller countries with a more dense population, higher density=more affordable high speed internet for ISP (not even talking about the end user here copper and fibre ain't cheap to lay, and ain't cheap in general when copper)

also. my speed test

those are my highest and lowest speedtests sits on average just below 2

I pay $99 a month for it, and 1TB of data (like I'll ever hit that)

And as anyone in my ts3 will tell you, my packet loss can be over 80% and my ping can hit 9999^

It would take you about 20 continuous days to download a terabyte of data...

That would require stable internet.

I've had downloads so slow I couldn't even run a speedtest.

Here is the artcle: http://www.businessinsider.com/america-has-terrible-internet-service-2013-10

The article cites a study that looks at several large cities in the US and compares the internet prices to other around the world, basically finds what we all already know, and finds that Asian cities (Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong) have some of the best priced and fastest internet speeds, while the US (might as well throw in Canada and Australia too) lag far behind.  One of only few exceptions to the study results was (you probably already guessed it) Google Fiber.

With that said, how much do you guys pay for your internet connections?

I'm currently paying $55 dollars/mo for 15mbps and live pretty close towards the center of Oklahoma.

697 zar (70.59 usd) for 4 mbps (400 KB/s for those who confuse these) SHAPED uncapped internet starting this month, if it sucks too much I'm going with unshaped for 897 zar (90.81). So yea, for a first world country you might slack a bit, compared to the rest of the world, you're doing pretty damned fine.

I think thats the main thing in Australia .... since telstra became a private company they havn't invested in infrastructure, hence the goverment has to build the nbn.

I get 35down 10 up .... but i pay 120 a month

Its all about those volumetric clouds

Dumbest comment I've read lately. Norway is the 6th largest country in Europe, very sparsely populated, and has heaps of terrain challenges that only Alaska can come remotely close to in the US, and Norway is rolling out 100% coverage of 100Mbps.

And by 100%, I mean even the Svalbard archipelago is included, a huge province of ice, permafrost earth and only 3.000 inhabitants.

All I hear is excuses, USA should do a lot better than it is.

Anyway:

3068740794.png

About $89 /mo

Note that both upload and ping is usually better, but there's a storm right now which usually affects my wi-fi.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

I'm about $40/month for 12mbps, but it also goes down for hours at a time and has packet loss up to 20% sometimes.

Not complaining relative to Australia, but the packet loss is a real problem when it comes to gaming and sometimes a bit of an inconvenience for streaming video.

Australia and America are the size of Europe. Hence why it's not comparable. 6th largest is still tiny.

The population density, and thus profitability, is comparable, and my example is relevant - like I said, it's a fortress of rock, fjords, ice and permafrost. If Norway can do it, the US sure can considering its much much simpler terrain. Besides, Norway, still being larger than every state within the US, begs the question why does not individual US states improve their infrastructure.

One or more of the parties in the US . . . Obama wanted to give more places high(er) speed internet a few years ago but Republicans threw an absolute fit over it. I think the bill was stalled on the Senate (or was it the House?) . . .

Density isn't the only factor, yeah its a lot easier in the US then au. But it requires a shipload more manhours of labour then where you are. And that's the real cost. Even with difficult terrain the larger size is Gonna cost more. Australia's NBN was designed to cover 95% of the population. But only 75% was actual fibre. The rest was satellite and wifi stations. And that's a minimum cost of 42 billion in investment. With satellite and wireless being used to save costs
